    Story
The storyline of New Super Mario Bros. is simple, but 100% classic Mario Bros. During a tranquil walk with Princess Peach, Mario witness a lightning strike on Peach's castle. Mario predictably races off to lend a hand, but no sooner has he stepped away from the always popular Peach, than he sees Bowser Jr. step into the picture and drag her away. As mario pursues them throughout both overworld and underworld, the appearance of Bowser and the Koopas shows that the list of fiends opposing him is longer than he expected. But Mario is not one to be put off by such things. Come along with Mario, Luigi and other friends as they venture into the depths of the Mushroom Kingdom to get Peach back once again.

    Gameplay
Although New Super Mario Bros. is a modern addition to the Mario Bros. tome, it revels in the fact that it is an old school side-scrolling platformer through and through. The single player mode is set on 80 levels spread across eight worlds, with players assuming the role of either Mario or Luigi. As in all Mario Bros. games, the ultimate goal is to rescue Peach, but as players traverse game levels the immediate goal is to collect coins, hop on top of enemies, and break open blocks while searching for power-ups as you race to capture the flag at the end of each level. Each of the game's eight worlds climaxes with a boss battle tied into the abduction of Peach, in which players will need to utilize the game's six power-ups in order to have success.

Along with its single player mode New Super Mario Bros. for DS also features two different multiplayer modes. The first is the Mario vs. Luigi, 2-player competitive mode. Here it's brother vs. brother in a literal race for Stars. Players choose to play as either Mario or Luigi, with the goal to collect the Stars that appear throughout the stage at timed intervals. If one brother gets a star(s) first they can be stolen away by the other player by doing damage. The one who gets to the set number of stars wins. This mode uses local wireless DS Single-Card download play, so only one game card is needed. The other multiplayer mode revolves around mini-game play. There are variety of these, which can be engaged in on a one-on-one basis, or in tournament fashion with 2-4 players.

    The Power-ups.
New Super Mario for DS contains contains six power-up options. Three of these, the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower and the Starman are back from previous games. There are also three entirely new to the game, these being: the Blue Koopa Shell, which Mario can crawl into to protect himself and spin when inside it to attack enemies; the Mega Mushroom, which allows for a huge Mario; and the Mini-Mushroom, which makes Mario very small and able to get into places that wouldn't otherwise be available.

    Key Game Features

    • Old-School Platforming Fun - Jump, bounce and power-up through visually stunning side-scrolling worlds filled with Mushroom Kingdom madness.
    • New Action - Grab a Mega Mushroom and grow to incredible proportions, or smash through your foes in a blue Koopa shell.
    • 2 Distinct Multiplayer Modes - New Super Mario Bros. features competitive 2-player multiplayer and mini-game functionality supporting up to 4 players.
    • A Classic Storyline - Bowser and Bowser Jr. have kidnapped Princess Peach, again, and only Mario and you can save her.
    • Powerups Galore - You'll find classic power-ups, like the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower in the game, as well as some all-new ones that let Mario explore the Mushroom Kingdom like never before.
    • New Moves - New Super Mario Bros. expands Mario's arsenal of moves to include some very powerful advanced techniques. If you want to uncover every secret in the game, you'll have to master them all.

mario bros ds game - Aug 25, 2010

really good game and some better features than the wii game, such as being able to retain fire mario, ice mario, flying mario, penguin mario suits if you already have one.

     Quite fun - Aug 13, 2010

I haven't finished the game yet, but so far this is the best game I own. The only thing is that World 1 & 2 without dying once. I recommend this game, though.

The game has so much to do you can never get bored. It is great to play it against my friends, and also playing alone.

     Awesome Game - Jul 11, 2010

I think this game is awesome because it is a bit hard, and not too easy. It has 8 worlds, and each world gets a bit harder as you go. I would recommend this game to someone.

     9 yr old loves it - Jul 08, 2010

I received the game right away. My kids love the mario brothers game. They enjoy it and it keeps them intertained with challenging levels.

Fun, fun, fun!!! (even for a grown up!) - Jun 01, 2010

I played Super Mario Bros. years ago and loved it then. I was a little skeptical about playing it on the DS but the reviews were positive so I bought it. I LOVE this game! It's challenging but not so much that I give up. I love that they stayed true to the original and I'm still enjoying this game after owning it for a while now. I recommend it!!

How to thrill your grandchildren! - May 30, 2010

I'm really pleased with this purchase - although not sold as new - when it arrived at my daughter's house she was surprised to see it still in it's original case complete with instructions etc in excellent condition. The children - 8 and 4 - are thrilled with it. What a cost saver too!

Fun if you've never played a Mario game before. - May 18, 2010

I grew up with the Mario games. From the first Super Mario Bros. to Mario Sunshine, I usually enjoyed the portly plumber's running and jumping adventures. But with New Super Mario Bros. for DS, something seemed off to me. Don't hate on me because I'm not one of those people that gave it 5 stars just because it's 'old school'. I played through this game twice, wondering if I missed something the first time around, clearing every stage 100%. Then it hit me- this game was made more for the casual gamer that Nintendo's trying to win over more than it is for those looking for a true new installment to the Super Mario Bros. series (like a Mario 4). A lot of the new elements they put in here aren't that new when it comes down to it, and you're probably better off going with the Wii version, which, while practically a director's cut of the DS version, at least has a few new things in it.

Story-wise, it's the same Mario: Princess Peach/Toadstool gets kidnapped by Bowser, and it's up to Mario to save the day. This time, Bowser Jr.'s up to no good too, and you'll be dealing with him more than any other enemy boss. You'll run, jump, wall jump, smash and fireball your way through a couple of worlds while collecting coins along the way. If you've never played a Mario game before, I guess this is a good start since it has most of the basic Mario elements. But for anyone hoping for something more, you may be disappointed.

I'll get the good out of the way first- the graphics look pretty good, and everything runs smoothly with no slowdown. Some of the levels actually did require me to think about where to go next, like in one of the ghost houses, or at least really look around to find one of the big coins so I could get 100%. The level design is a combination of Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3, the two games that I thought had the best level design of any 2D Mario game. The game's also fairly long, about as long as the two I just mentioned.

Unfortunately, New Super Mario Bros. has so many little problems that they drag the score down big time. First, the new giant and mini mushrooms don't really add anything to the gameplay. You can only use the giant mushroom in select world types for it to be of much use, and even then, it just makes clearing the level too easy. When you smash enough enemies and objects, you get extra lives based on how much of the bar you fill at the top of the screen...and this game is VERY generous with the extra lives, so it's not like you'll ever need more. The mini mushroom is a cool concept on paper since it allows you to run on water and jump a little higher, but it's also much easier to die when small, and harder to control jumps. Where they added these two abilities, they took away any flight powers. No raccoon leaves, and no magic capes. You're either on land or walking on clouds or swimming through the whole game. And I can't stress how much slack the game gives you with extra lives. It felt like I couldn't clear a stage without getting at least two 1-up mushrooms or getting enough coins to add to my already large stock. I also didn't care for any of the boss fights. When you fight Bowser, it's a tribute to how you fought him in the original Super Mario Bros., and all the other boss fights were basic 'jump on them or butt stomp for more damage and they're toast' ones. Where some of the levels were challenging, the boss battles were anything but. Finally, what's with the new enemy designs? I'm not against new enemies in a Mario game, but most of the new guys here really don't fit in with the style of the game and were more distracting than anything.

There are a lot of different multiplayer games, though a lot of them are pretty short and dumb. The one most people I know play the most is the VS mode where one person is Mario and the other's Luigi, and they try to take eachother's coins. These are a nice addition for younger kids, but I doubt anyone over 15's going to get much out of it.

As you can tell, I didn't care much for New Super Mario Bros., but I didn't hate it. I was just extremely disappointed. The game felt very rushed to me, and I didn't hesitate on selling it once I got everything. It certainly isn't worth the price it's going for now, and even with it being a top seller for the DS, it shouldn't be more than twenty bucks at this point. But if you haven't played a Mario game before, and have a regular DS or DS Lite, go with one of the GBA re-releases of the NES and SNES games. You'll get much more for your money.

     Highly Recommended - May 17, 2010

This game was a nice refresher, as it was the first 2D game in the series since the old games. one of the things I liked most about it was the fact that not only was it multi-platformed, but the game also featured new power-ups (which you can carry multiple at once, like on Super Mario World) such as the Super Mushroom. Another neat little trick is the fact that you can also play as Luigi (because we all know that green is cooler than red). On the Wii version, which I've yet to play, you can also play in 4 player co-op at once, which is also a first. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and those little Toady Guys, as I call 'em, are all playable. The story is the same old, same old, Peach gets kidnapped, Mario's the hero, Bowser is the bad guy...whatever. Anyone who'd call themselves a true Mario fan's definitely gotta get this. I'd recommend it to anyone. Did I mention that it had 80 levels, plus mini games, and that you could store at least one power up?

     Hey!!! Its Mario! - May 17, 2010

To keep this short and sweet. New Super Mario Bros for the DS is the Mario game you've come to love him by. With this game being on the DS you can play this game on the go and enjoy the Goomba stomping, shell kicking, mushroom power ups till your heart is content. Also when your done with the story, there are plenty of mini games to play. Overall New Super Mario Bros. is an awesome game.

New Super Mario is Super for DS - Apr 21, 2010

After getting addicted to New Super Mario Bros for Wii, I was excited to see it available for my DS and hoped it would match up for "on the go Mario". It does! It is lots of addictive fun and very much like the Wii game with a few minor changes. Still has similar worlds to conquer and a few fun differences like when you get a giant Mario who can take care of everything. If you like Mario Bros...and you liked the NEW one on Wii, you will love this!

     New Super Mario Bros.is a ton of fun. - Apr 19, 2010

This game is for my wife who orignially bought a game off of ebay and it ended up being bootleg. It not only wouldn't work it messed up her DS lite. This game was a little more but it works great and she loves it!

new super mario bros - Apr 12, 2010

Bought this game for my 7 1/2 year old grandson for Easter. Great game he loves it. Highly recommend this game.

     Fun Forever - Apr 11, 2010

Super Mario Bros is fun and has activites for you to do even after you defeat all the bosses. I got mine 2 years ago, and there are still things that I can do. Right now I am collecting the big stars you find in each game.

     BEST GAME EVER - Apr 07, 2010

I remember when I got the DS Lite. It was Christmas 2006 and I had turned 10 that summer. I had been BEGGING my parents to get me one. When I finally opened up the present that contained it, I also found that it came with a game. You all are probably guessing what game it was. New Super Mario Bros! I had played it at the store while my dad was looking for a computer part, AND I LITERALLY TRIED TO PRY THE DS AND THE GAME FROM THE HOLSTER BEST BUY PUT IT IN. I immediately started playing it (after a little sticky situation involving screen protectors... getting stuck on the screen in the wrong place). By the time lunch came around (about 2 hours later), I had gotten half way through World 2. In other words, LOVED IT!

However, a few years later, I was SO DESPERATE to get my hands on Guitar Hero: On Tour (before I knew it SUCKED!) that I traded in 7 games for it (New Super Mario Bros. made up for the last $20, but I didn't care at the time) at Gamestop...

Now, after getting New Super Mario Bros. Wii on Thanksgiving (about a week after it came out, as a surprise gift from my dad), I wanted to play the game on the go. So now I am on a FRENZY to get some cash for the game. Here are the pros and the cons about the game (mostly pros, almost no cons to complain about):

    --PROS--

    *Best. Game. EVER!

*On the go 3D Super Mario Bros. ACTION!

*BEST GRAPHICS EVER ON THE DS YET! (From what I remember)

*NEW POWER-UPS! (ALL HAIL THE SUPER DUPER MUSHROOM!)

    *ADDICTING!

*Like having New Super Mario Bros. Wii on the go! (Same for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, except backwards XD)

    *MULTI-PLAYER!

    *MINI-GAMES!

    --CONS--

    ...can't think of anything.

Well, here is what I rate the game (drum-roll)...............

11/10! THIS ONE GOES TO AN 11! OH MY GOSH!!!!

This is better than CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2!

Nintendo brings back the classics, with suprising sucsess - Apr 05, 2010

I will admit that I was a little reluctant at first but after trying this game out I can tell you that this game is really a sucsess, but then again, who was expecting it not to be? Almost every game that comes out of nintedo has a quality about it that blows away other handheld gaming platforms. I know what you are thinking, "he's just another nintendo fanboy", but this is not the case. This game is amazingly well put together and i would recommend it to anyone with a ds and $20 extra lying around the house...

LOVE it so much, we fight over the DS! - Mar 29, 2010

I'm a 30-something-year-old Mom. Having grown up with the ORIGINAL Mario Brothers on NES and Super Nintendo, I found the game was still just as entertaining to play as when I was a teenager. Excellent choice.

     Bad camera angles - Mar 09, 2010

I played this on the orginal console and wasn't a big fan of it then. I really don't like how the camera is set up, it makes me feel dizzy and want to vomit after playing for two minutes. So no, I've never beat the game. My hubby bought this for me, but had more fun with it than I did. Maybe if there was a way to fix the camera so it wasn't shifting all the time, it would be a better game. But I did enjoy the mini games.

     Great, great game - Mar 04, 2010

My 5 1/2 year old son is absolutely smitten with this game. Although his favorite is still the version for the Wii, this makes both short and long trips in the car a pleasure.

Great game play (yeah, he has let me go at it) and very close to the big-screen version.

    Get it.

     Serious Fun! - Feb 28, 2010

My kids love this game more than any other. The whole family gets in on the fun when they will let us!! Great purchase...
