Description
The PlayStation 3 Blu-ray remote control enables users streamlined access to the PlayStation 3 system's disc features. Unlike standard infrared remotes, the Blu-ray remote control uses Bluetooth technology so it can be used without having to point directly at the PlayStation 3 system.

Instructions for "pairing" are unclear - Aug 30, 2010
I don't know maybe it's me, but at first I didn't think to use the Controller to Register or "pair" the Remote to the PS3 and it wasn't mentioned. The instructions assume that everyone should "know" these things and what a XMB menu stands for. Plus, it doesn't say how to find the Settings that have a logo like a small suitcase or whatever it's supposed to be. But you go to the DVD settings for the TV, a menu appears, then tap the Left directional arrow on the Controller until you find it then X select it. Now you have to arrow down to find the Accessory Settings with this goofy logo and select this. Then it will give directions to register the remote by pressing the Enter and Start buttons simultaneously until the screen changes. That took, off and on, about 5 minutes. I was wondering if I had a bad remote. I changed the batteries again and spun them around pressed both again and held it and finally the screen changed and it said that the remote was registered. I still don't like the fact that you can turn the PS3 on by pressing down the Playstation logo, but can't turn it off unless you do so from a menu on the TV screen. Why is that? Maybe I changed my mind about turning it on. I have to get up to turn the PS3 off. It's not that I'm lazy but why doesn't a Remote Control have an Off button! Plus, Amazon gives me two review selections for a game and not for a PS3 remote! How much fun is this game? How do you rate this game overall? Duh, it's a Sony Blu-ray Remote Control and not a game. And, I must say, it was no fun figuring this out or getting it registered. And since there's no "off" button I gave it a 3 Star rating. And, yes, that "stop" button doesn't work the same as on my DVR but let's face it the U.S. doesn't require compatibility compliance as some other countries do so we just have to bite the bullet. However, it does make life more complex remembering which controller does or doesn't do what or how.
Yep. It's a Remote Control. - Aug 23, 2010
The PS3 remote control uses Bluetooth, which means you don't have to point it at the system for it to work, but it also runs through batteries a bit faster than your standard TV remote. You'll probably need to replace or recharge its AA's every 6 months or so, depending on use. Also, even though many of the buttons feature the traditional PS3 controller symbols, the remote only works for media playback, not games.
Other than that, it's a standard remote control. Works as advertised.
A necessity, should be purchased with EVERY PS3 - Aug 23, 2010
I honestly don't think I could go back to using my PS3 without this remote. Although I play a few games, a lot of the time the PS3 is on, its playing some sort of video. DVD, Blu Ray and Netflix Watch Instantly are enhanced so much by using the remote. The Controller is fine just to play and pause but one or both of the sticks inevitably gets knocked in the process bumping the video either forward or back. What makes me extremely glad to have a PS3 and not just a blu ray player however is the Bluetooth connection, used for both the controller and this remote, bluetooth allows the system to be controlled through the door of the cabinet in which it is housed. It use to be that someone would be distracted by the lights and close the door, but if the movie needed to be paused, the door would have to be reopened, not so anymore. Through walls, doors and around corners this remote works perfectly, and the ease of use it provides with watching films on the PS3 is priceless.
There are two features that this remote lacks, one is useless and one is important.
The feature that I never use and is not included is the ability to control FF speed between 1.0 and 3.0X which is accomplished normally with the right joystick. The feature which i wish had been thought out on this remote is a backlight. My TV remote has one so why shouldn't my DVD remote, no more fumbling in the dark would have been nice but was over looked.
I also don't understand why it doesn't use the same rechargeable battery system as the PS3 controller, maybe to keep the price down and the batteries last forever anyway so its not a big deal. Finally, one thing I wish was thought out on the remote is a keyboard. It has a number pad, but unfortunately it doesn't work like a phone when it comes to entering text.
A Must have that shouldn't be - Aug 21, 2010
There really should be no need for this remote to begin with because Sony should have included an IR port on the PS3 so we could use any universal remote to control Blu-Ray and DVD playback. My TV has HDMI-CEC which does allow its remote to have minimal control over the PS3 through the HDMI but this is very minimal it has the ability to turn it on by selecting it though the input menus of the TV. My TV remote will then navigate through the PS3 menus perfectly fine and you can start up Blu-Rays or DVD and navigate through their menus but after you start the movie the only ability my TV remote has over the movie is to pause and resume play, so I decided to get this remote for the added control over movies.
The button layout on the remote is acceptable and the remote gives the added functionality that I wanted that my TV remote was just not able to so this remote was worth what it cost, but it does have a few problems and one annoying flaw.
It is not back-lit, for the most part this is no big deal but I have only had the remote a few weeks now and once I am more familiar with the button layout this should not be a problem at all.
The biggest and most annoying issue of this remote is that it turns the PS3 on with the touch of any button and this is very easy to do on accident and with HDMI-CEC enable this becomes even more annoying because it doesn't just turn on the PS3 but changes my TV to display it automatically, a very nice feature when you want to use your PS3, but when you set down another remote next to this one and bump any button and it changes your TV's input setting because your PS3 turned on is very annoying. This leaves two options disable HDMI-CEC and loose some very neat features like just having to turn off the TV and having my PS3 turn off as well and automatically switching inputs to my PS3 when I turn it on and want to use it, or keep this remote away from the others when not using it.
Now even if I do disable the HDMI-CEC there is still a problem with how easy the remote turns on the PS3 because there is no dedicated power button so I cannot just hit one button and turn it back off. I do have my PS3 automatically set to automatically turn off after 1 hour so not the biggest deal and I can always try to turn it off without switching my TVs display.
I would imagine that this press any button and turn on the system could be fixed through a PS3 firmware update and if this ever happens I would give this remote a 4 out 5 starts, but as it stands it only gets 3.
Ultimately the PS3 should have just had an IR sensor so any universal remote would work with it, some may try to defend the PS3's lack of an IR port by saying bluetooth is the future, well it may be the future but if the device so so high tech it should be able to work with current technology as well and this remote should not be the must have that it is.
A sexy, sleek and convenient remote! - Aug 06, 2010
Well we all know the PS3 looks great with dvds and blu-ray so why not add a nice remote? This remote does it jobs, more user friendly and it is sexy and sleek looking. I really don't want to use 2 hands to play my movies. It is annoying. This isn't a video game. This is a movie for crying out loud! This remote is more user friendly than the dual shock controller because it is all set up like a blu-ray remote with all necessary buttons. Plus, it is easier to navigate the navigation screen. And lets be real, people! It is movie night, you got your girl with you and you want her to pause the movie for a second. It isn't "sexy" to give her a dual shock controller which she doesn't know how to use and makes her think you are some video game freak. You might as well brag about your +100 video game collection. You give her the sleek blu-ray remote which she knows how to work.
Design flaws - Jul 31, 2010
Too many design flaws on this thing. Too easy to turn on the PS3, too difficult to turn off the PS3, and you end up in the PS3 menu unexpectedly.
1. No off button. You cannot turn the PS3 off without navigating menus. I end walking up to the PS3 and pressing the 1/0 button on it (which doesn't always work either, since you can't turn off the PS3 right after turning it on).
2. Every button is an on button. Press any button and the PS3 turns on.
3. While playing a DVD, and the stop button doesn't take you to the DVD top menu, it takes you to the PS3 menu.
4. The "Top Menu" button takes you to the PS3 menu, unlike every other DVD controller. Instead, you need to press the Pop-Up/Menu button to get the DVD controller.
Remote is really nice to have! - Jul 31, 2010
I finally bought the PS3 Remote for the blueray player... It is really nice to have and makes playing the movies much easier. It was fairly cheap so I would recommend getting one if you play movies frequently.
Frustrated - Jul 24, 2010
Okay so the remote works great, it's light on batteries and blah blah but every time it gets touched the PS3 comes on. It's on 24/7 I would have thought BT would be cool for a remote but it sucks or they need to make this so not every button turns it on.
Worth it - Jul 23, 2010
Buying this remote to go with our PS3 was worth it. We are very happy with it. It works as expected, which is better than our TV remote works with the TV. Pause button pauses Netflix streaming content, which is nice.
SONY PLAYSTATION BLUE RAY DISC - Jul 14, 2010
Excellent product, received on time and in perfect condition. This control allows you to take much advantage in using the Play Station 3.
Great gadget! - Jul 12, 2010
I bought this product used, and I'm glad I bought it. I bought it for my husband as a little extra present for his birthday. I know you can control movies with the wireless controller, but it just makes more sense with the remote. New or used, I recommend this product if you find it at a good price point.
PS3 Remotes!! How do they work?! - Jul 07, 2010
It's a remote. It doesn't have any glowie buttons, but it's still better than using a ps3 controller to play movies. If you're just looking for a Wii style controller you should wait for the new controllers to come out because this is a movie remote.
Great Buy! - Jul 02, 2010
Does everything for the Blu Ray player. You can turn the system on and off with it. I dont use my controler to watch movies anymore. Also works great for watching movies via inernet on Netflix!
Worlds better than the game controller for navigating movies - Jun 29, 2010
I had to buy this remote after repeated complaints from my wife that she didn't know how to use the game controller to navigate through movies. Granted, it's not an overwhelming challenge with the controller, but this remote is much more convenient. First, I like not having to push a connect button as required by the controller. This remote is fast and responsive, and has great coverage from wherever I am in the room. I haven't tested it from more than 15 feet from the PS3, but within this range it works perfect.
The only thing I can't figure out is why there isn't a power button on the remote. I would like to be able to turn the system off with the remote, but the button is noticeably absent. I would also like it to be backlit for use in the dark. Other than that, it's a great remote. Sleek, attractive, and full of functionality. And best of all, the wife is happy!
Worst remote ever!!!! - Jun 19, 2010
Remote is too sensitive plus it has no dedicated "Power" button. What kind of crappy remote has no power button. Plus, any button turns the PS3 on, making mistakes often, then you just can't turn it off, you have to wait for the stupid thing to boot, then either watch the screen to turn it off, or try to time it. Pain in the rear for sure. Anyways, I was consent to live w/ these setbacks, but then the stupid thing stopped working after about a year. Tried to re-pair w/ bluetooth to no avail. In anger, I smashed it against the wall. Looks a lot better now. Hahahahahah! By the way, I hate the PS3 too. Mine broke and they wanted to charge me $150 to fix. I smashed that against the wall too.
good remote - Jun 15, 2010
it's nice to use this instead of a controller. has all of the features that a blu-ray remote would have. easy to use
A must have - Jun 14, 2010
If you use your PS3 to watch movies, then this remote is a must have. While the game controller will work for watching movies, it is clumsy and you will sometimes forget which button does which function.
Playstation 3 Remote - Jun 08, 2010
This is a really nice remote, works well and I like the set up of the buttons, and how it works. Good Product.
Works great!! - Jun 08, 2010
Just made it easier to navigate through Netflix menus. Other than that it's just a remote control. But it serves its function well.
Remote is not well made!!! Such a rif off - Jun 03, 2010
Bought this remote in Dec and now in June it just stops working!!! Thought it was the battery but oh no!! And amazon wants to give me a partial refund!!!? This is ridiculous!!!
Not that impressed really... - May 30, 2010
I got a PS3 for Christmas as a Blu-Ray and regular DVD player. I was an early adopter on the Xbox 360 and was SURE that HD-DVD would be the winning format. History has shown that to be wrong. Stinging from my poor decision, I waited it out and well, what the heck, adopted Blu-ray hoping that my purchase wasn't the start of some sort of Blu-Ray pandemic that would 86 yet another own-your-own-media format. When it tanks, I'm movin' to Uruguay to harvest guano.
However, I am one of the few people alive that can comment on the Xbox remote control vs. the PS3 Remote. The major difference is that the Xbox control LIT UP.
The PS3 does not light up. Which really, is numb. Oh sure it's Bluetooth but when we watch movies, it's not in a brightly lit room. We're rockin' the home theater experience which means it's dark and you have to watch out that you don't inadvertently sit on a nesting feline. The ergonomics are weak meaning that there is no real texture telling you that one button means play and the other stop or pause or fast forward or chapter ahead. They are sized a whisker differently but really, why no lights? Or even something that glows? Or package it with a flashlight. You're killin' me here.
And I'm dying to know, what are the multi-colored buttons for? Actually, that's hyperbole. I truly don't care. Someone will post that the buttons actually have an importance rivaled only by the discovery of the polio vaccine or fire but I could give a hoot. I'd press these pretty buttons (they sure are tempting since everything else is blacked out) but in the event it somehow controls some behavior on the PS3 that would forever eliminate the color red from existence, I'm keeping my curiosity at bay.
That said, when you can actually see the buttons it does work without any flaws and you don't have to wave it around trying to make contact with the PS3 as it's not an infrared signal from the remote to the Blu-ray. And mixing Bluetooth with Blu-Ray is pretty awesome. Not really but is it simply coincidence all of this bluish high tech stuff? I think not.
Anyway, Xbox remote which still works on my 6 HD-DVD's which will one day be relegated to ultra-high-definition beer coasters gets 5 stars. Ho hum PS3 darkened remote gets 2 because it's of very little use in a darkened room and it has the potentially doomsday multicolored buttons.
Good remote with some flaws - May 29, 2010
I have owned the PS3 Blu-ray Remote since April 2008 when I first got my PS3. It is a good remote and works very well. It is useful for navigating the Cross Media Bar (XMB) when you don't feel like using your controller and also for choosing music tracks, pictures etc. However, there are some glaring issues with the remote which I would like Sony to maybe address in the future.
Issue #1: The first issue I noticed and many have complained about is the "Stop" button. Now if you have a PS3 with the latest firmware update then this may not be that big of a deal. When you hit stop you will be sent back to the XMB but upon selecting to play your movie again it will resume where it left off. This was a feature later added to the PS3 so owners of older PS3s that did not get that firmware update will have to resume their DVD/Blu-Ray movie from teh beginning.
The Stop Button is right smack in between the "Play" and "Pause" button like the cream filling in an Oreo cookie. While the "Play" button does have a raise in it so you can feel it in the dark the "Stop" and "Pause" button do not. When I first got this remote I figured that the "Pause" button would be underneath the "Play" button but it isn't. I can't count the number of times I have hit "Stop" only to be brought back to the XMB when I meant to hit "Pause." Now I don't have this issue since I have trained myself to remember that the "Pause" button is at the bottom but this should not be an issue in the first place.
The button placement was poorly designed on this remote and I wish Sony would make a revision.
Issue #2: This is an issue which has annoyed me many times, and that is the sensitive buttons. When I am playing my Xbox and I put maybe my television remote to the side and if it lightly taps the PS3 Blu-ray Remote then BOOM my PS3 will turn on. The buttons are extremely sensitive (just about as sensitive as the "PS Button" on the center of your PS3 controller. This can also be very annoying if someone by accident touches it ever so slightly during a movie and then you may accidentally hit something you didn't mean to. There should have been more resistance when hitting the buttons.
Issue #3: This issue as much as it would be a luxury. It would have been nice to see the PS3 Blu-ray remote have back-lit buttons so you could see them in the dark. Especially, when the remote already has some silly button set-ups this would be very helpful.
Aside from these three things this is an excellent remote. The battery life is very good and in the two years I have had this remote I only recall changing the batteries in it twice. I would recommend this remote to anybody who owns a PS3 because it does make your movie watching experience much more enjoyable then using the standard DualShock 3/Six-Axis Controller.
A simple remote for playing DVDs or Blu-ray - May 28, 2010
I got this remote so that I can watch movies on the PS3, without trying to figure out the regular game playing remote. This remote has a lot of buttons but so far what I have been using (only watched one movie since I bought the remote) is play, pause, enter, control panel, skip, and fast forward. Just the simple buttons, I don't know what all the others do. Setting up the remote was easy (look at the instructions). Now I can watch my movies on the PS3 with a remote.
Remote PS3 - May 27, 2010
It rarely gets used but when it does, it is a nice device to have. You could use youe PS3 controller as it it wireless. But I find having a remote it somehting most of are accustomed to when watching tv, or movies.
Get one!! - May 25, 2010
If you are using your game controller to watch DVD's and Netfix get this controller. It works off batteries so your never interupted with a low battery problem while watching a movie. Using this controller also keeps your rechargeable game contollers ready to play games.
