Description
Ideal for a wide range of photographers from first-time digital SLR users to veteran photo enthusiasts, the new Canon EOS Rebel XS camera is designed to embody what you have come to expect from the EOS Rebel series -- a fast, non-intimidating, lightweight, easy-to-use camera that produces excellent images and starts emerging photographers off on the right foot. Immediately, photographers will take notice of the camera's Optical Image Stabilized kit lens for crisp focus, compensating for camera shake from unsteady hands or a moving vehicle. The new Rebel model also incorporates Canon's DIGIC III image processor, 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, Live View, Auto Lighting Optimizer, 7-point wide-area autofocus (AF) sensor and 3.0 frames per second continuous JPEG burst rate where the number of consecutive shots in a burst is only limited by the capacity of the flash memory card in the camera.

Love this camera...issues with AF lense however.. - Sep 03, 2010
I purchased this camera in Dec. of 2009 and I have been extremely pleased with it. I am a beginner with SLR cameras and this one has been very easy to learn to use. Beautiful picture quality and ease of use. Just today I am having issues with the AF on the lense that came with the camera. It is not working. I am reading on the internet that others are having this same problem. I have tried everything to remedy the problem to no avail. I will have to call Canon tomorrow and probably send it back to them to get the problem resolved. I am very upset about this and am hoping this isn't a persistant problem through the life of the camera..........
awsome camera - Aug 23, 2010
great product. i am a beginner at this so everything is kind of new for me. but it is very easy to use and picture quality is very nice. this camera can do a whole lot more once you get past the beginner stuff, but it will take a while to get everything down. but overall a very satisfy purchase.
Not much wrong here. - Aug 17, 2010
It's said that no matter what DSLR you buy, you have the potential to get top notch pictures, no matter the brand or model. Obviously, as you climb higher on the list of dslr models, they get nicer and nicer. But if you're a beginner, this camera can do all you want.
This camera is truly amazing.
Display: Awesome! The Canon XSi has a bit bigger screen which is why some choose that, but no big deal to me, this one is JUST FINE!
Ease of use: Very easy to use. Couldnt be simpler.
Features: Packed with features. The only one that I am very sad to be missing is the option to use a wireless remote. I dont know the name of it but there's like a wireless signal that they left out on the XS, which means no wireless remotes for us 1000D users. But we still have the 1o second timer ;)
Image quality: GORGEOUS! Ive seen pictures from the XSi and T1i and you can barely tell the difference between those and the XS! Its stunning. Especially outdoors. This camera produces some AMAZING BOKEHS. Theyre simply gorgeous.
Battery life: Lasts me weeks. I hardly ever pop out the charger to charge the battery. Its surprising and amazing! Ive thought about buying a spare battery, but at the moment I have no need for one, this one lasts so long.
Low light performance: Its alright. Its not terrible, but the shutter speed is slooow in low light, thus causing blurry pictures. But its not too bad.
Portability: Very good!
Manual controls: All I shoot is manual. Ive been very impressed. And it shows you on a meter how exposed your picture is, which is handy.
Shooting speed: Very nice! Sometimes not in low light but no big deal.
Overall: BUY THIS CAMERA IF you're a beginner to the DSLR world, or even an amateur. The kit lens is doing me wonders, i cant wait to see what it does with better lenses.
Cheers. :)
BATTERY ISSUES - Aug 16, 2010
I've had my Canon XS for several months now, and just starting taking photography classes, to help me better understand all the bells and whistles of photography. One problem I've run across is the battery life. I have the original battery and after fully charging it, there are only three lines of battery life when I put it in my camera. I was told by a "expert" battery distributer, the problem might be my camera. I brought a replacement battery with the same results. Does anyone have any ideas, why?? Any suggestions will be very helpful. Otherwise, I am pleased with my camera...
UPDATE: 8/24/10
SO....since I posted, I actually took my battery and camera in tow, to have an EXPERT look at it. And lo and behold, the battery is fine, I was looking at the wrong....sorry for the 4-stars......if I could change it 5-stars all the way for my Rebel Cannon XS.
Great beginner SLR - Aug 07, 2010
I bought this camera about 3 months ago. I LOVE it. I have shot a big variety of things with it: nature, people, food, etc. I did a ton of research before buying, and right now I still just have the kit lens, but I feel like this camera gives me exactly what I wanted:great quality, beautiful pictures. It is small and portable compared to the higher end SLR's, and all the functions you need on the camera are on the face of it, so you aren't always having to flick through the menu. I sometimes feel limited, like if I want to take a macro shot, but that would be better if I had a different lens. I am hesitant to use the flash, although sometimes this bites me in the butt. In dim light, the camera doesn't do so well without flash, and the blur you get doesn't really show up on the display; only later can you tell that the photo is blurry. Overall though, any photo hobbyist would have a great time with this camera. It is great for traveling or just taking photos of everyday things, and your photos will have a sharp professional look to them that they wouldn't with a point and shoot. Have fun!
Excellent Camera at the right price - Jul 31, 2010
Great camera!! Excellent photo quality and ease of use. I highly recommend some additions to your purchase. I purchased a Canon Lens Hood EW-60C that easily attaches to the lens and protects it from damage. I also purchased a Hoya UV filter 55mm Pitch: 0.75 to protect the actual lens from scratches. Another helpful purchase was the Cap Keeper by Sima, it attaches the cap to your lens strap so you don't have to worry about where to put the cap when your trying to get the shot. It only costs a few dollars but is a really helpful addition. I hope this helps. The only reason I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 is because it doesn't take video. Just do it you wont regret it.
Canon Rebel XS 10.1 Digital SLR Camera - Jul 28, 2010
This purchase was a replacement for the same camera which I had purchased new on Amazon and which had subsequently been stolen out of my daughter's car. Thought I would take a shot at saving some money this time around and purchased a used camera. Unfortunately, the camera simply stopped working within a week - right in the middle of an event we were photographing. Could have been just a fluke, but I don't think I'd buy anything like this used again, even it is on Amazon which has a good reputation.
Very good camera - Jul 23, 2010
For as many reviews as there are for this camera, there isn't a lot that I can add. The only feature that perplexes me a bit is the inability to "erase all" by using the delete button. Other models allow for this but for some reason, using the delete button gives you the option of deleting only one picture at a time.
Works GREAT! - Jul 21, 2010
This is a great camera. I would recommend it to anyone. It is professional quality and MACRO pictures come out great. There are also MANY, MANY Accessories and different kits you can buy for accessories. The best camera I have ever used. Also its great quality and amazing design.
This is the entry-level d-SLR you're looking for. - Jul 16, 2010
My first experience with Canon cameras was several years ago when I was working at a photography studio that had gone digital. I was impressed with them then, and they continue to impress me now. A year or so after leaving the studio, I was in the market to buy my first d-SLR camera. I compared several different brands and models, and I finally settled on the Rebel XS. I hate to use a cliché, but it really is "more bang for your buck". The Rebel XS just has so much more to offer than its similarly-priced Nikon counterpart (the 3000D). Most of the time, you can get this camera bundled with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens, which is a really good starter lens.
If you're looking to go pro, then you'll probably want to buy a more upscale d-SLR (the Canon EOS 400D is a typical model), but if you just want a well-rounded, entry-level d-SLR, the Rebel XS (any camera from the Rebel series, really) is the one you want. This camera gives you the freedom of a d-SLR with the ease of use of a compact ("point-and-shoot"). The camera is highly customizable, and most accessories you buy for this camera will be compatible with other Canon SLR models, as well - in case you ever want to move to a more upscale model in the future. The nice thing is, however, that you don't HAVE to buy accessories. If you have a camera, a lens, and a memory card, then you're good to go. One thing you will need with this camera, as I mentioned, is a memory card. It uses a standard SD Card, but I would recommend a high-speed card (for fast shooting) such as this one: SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 4GB SD Memory Card (SDSDRH-004G-A11, US Retail Package).
Getting started with this camera is very easy; the user's manual is very clear, and the camera itself is not complicated. The camera has a variety of shooting modes which serve everyone from the newbie amateur to the seasoned pro. One nice thing about this camera is its ability to shoot RAW images, which means you can edit your pictures more without sacrificing image quality (an unfortunate drawback of JPG format). If you're used to JPG, however, this camera still saves images in that format.
Compared to many d-SLRs, this camera is lightweight and versatile. It has a built-in flash, but a more powerful flash can still be attached and synched if necessary. If you're using it for portrait photography, it has the ability to shoot tethered (meaning it is connected to a computer/software and its images go directly into the computer instead of to the SD card). It has a lightning-fast startup; just flip the power switch and it's turned on. The battery lasts a long time before needing to be recharged. One of the only drawbacks I've noticed to this camera is that it won't run on AC power without a special adapter (which must be purchased separately), but since the battery lasts a long time (and since additional battery packs for this model are relatively inexpensive), that isn't a large problem (I was taking 200-300 pictures per day and went about three weeks before needing to charge the battery). A huge advantage that I should mention is that the camera's sensor is self-cleaning. This means that there is no complicated process of removing the sensor and cleaning it (although manually cleaning it every so often is a good idea).
I could go on and on with praise for this camera, but no one wants to read a book-length product review. I'm not going to say that this is the "last camera you'll ever need," but it is an excellent model for both snapshots and for shutterbug experimenting. It's also good for semi-pros like myself who just want a good, dependable camera that is relatively inexpensive but takes professional-quality images.

Great Camera When Upgrading From A Traditional Point and Shoot! Amazing!! - Jul 09, 2010
This is my first "professional" high-end digital camera and I can't be more satisfied. We have two kids, one in sports & theater and our traditional small point-n-shoot camera just wasn't cutting it. We are now capturing amazing photos that look like a professional photographer took. I highly recommend this camera!
Canon XS - Jul 07, 2010
I absolutely love this camera and have had a wonderful time shooting with it. From the presets to manual operation, this camera delivers quality. It is a great first DSLR which will provide many years of learning and quality shooting. As a videographer, I purchased this entry level camera to improve my shooting composition, but can also bring along on shoots for professional results. Compact, easily portable, fits well in the hand, and provides great quality results. Add on some lenses and expand it's capability! Would purchase again. I actually prefer this over the xsi.
Very nice - Jun 19, 2010
This is my first digital SLR camera. I didn't know many options and took me over a day to go thru the manual and try different options. Well worth the money.
Best camera for a beginner photographer - Jun 15, 2010
I have never owned a camera aside from a cheap cellphone before this, and have always been interested. After weeks of research and asking around online, I've been directed too this camera, which I heard was the same as the new updated XSI, only difference was few features and a smaller screen. I've owned this camera for around a year and a half, no problems, and still takes pictures as good as day 1. The camera is really easy to use, and really user friendly. It is extremely easy to use, and has preset modes that you can automatically take decent photos with if you aren't yet good enough changing the aperture or ISO. The lens included is a basic 18mm-55mm, which is pretty good and offers image stabilization and auto focus, which both come in handy if you are a beginner or intermediate and can't quite get your pictures to come out clear. As you learn the tricks and features behind this camera and can soon work your way out of using the preset modes, into using the more advanced modes, you may want to upgrade the default lens, as it isn't the best for more advanced pictures, but I'll explain in more detail on the actual amazon page for the lens. You will be satisfied with how good the pictures and lens this camera comes with, and some pictures I've taken actually look like they are textbook/magazine worthy, and that's just with using the default settings. There are a lot of custom shooting modes you can put this camera in if you want more vivid colored pictures, or just black and white. You can change a lot of things, as well as use certain shooting modes that work better for moving things, as well as better for capturing objects with more depth. You might want to get the book Canon XS for dummies, which will go into more detail than the manual about all the specific features, what they do, and break this camera up piece by piece until you know what everything is and when the best time to use each piece is. I can't really explain what is best since it depends on what you're shooting and if you are a beginner, you may want to stick with the default modes, as they take really good casual pictures and you don't have to mess around with the settings. How do you know which default to use? Well I think its obvious, theres standard, obviously standard settings, close up, if you are taking a close up picture of a flower or object, night shot, obviously used under low light settings, and no flash, obviously if the lighting is too high to use flash. That brings us to flash, the built in flash is great for close up shots where lighting is average to low, but is pretty weak when you get farther back then 10 feet and becomes quite useless unless you are taking a night shot. I suggest removing flash if you are taking a medium distant shot in adequate lighting. Otherwise, you may want to but a portable flash that you can attach if you're looking for a wider range, and more efficient flash. This camera overall, is really good and can be used with most modern lenses. Canon makes some really great lenses, and even look at the ratings, this camera might not be the best for an expert, but for a beginner/intermediate who wants to get the most for a low price, this camera delivers much more quality than what you pay for. Don't let the price fool you either, it is really good and will satisfy you in terms of features and quality, and with the right lenses, is capable of taking magazine worthy photos. Don't spend more on another camera when you don't have to.
Great camera - Jun 15, 2010
Great camera, specially considering the price. Some say that this is harder to use than the Nikon D3000, but it took me just 5 minutes and some 20 pics to get used to the manual controls. After that, you get really good quality image, sharp pictures, and very good results in low light.
Some tips: forget about the live view, it's just useless. Avoid using high iso modes, since it makes a lot of noise for values over 400 (but this is just like any other camera within this price range). Be really carefull when using the manual focus mode, because there will be a lot of pictures that will look great in the lcd screen, but on bigger screen will look totally out of focus.
Over all, it's a great camera, and after trying a friend's Nikon D3000, I think this is the best choice if you are looking for "my first dslr", just like I was two months ago.
my review - May 29, 2010
i just bought my camera yesterday with the speculation that i have 30 days to return it if i decide that i dont like it. i was trying to decide between getting this one and a nikon d3000. i took my camera (this one - canon) out to a contesting horse show today (barrel racing, etc) to try it out. i am (i think) a decent photographer, except i occationally have a little blurriness in high action photos, so i wanted to make sure that whichever DSLR i chose would be good at taking fast action as well as still pictures. i must admit, i am sold on this canon! it has done everything i have asked of it wonderfully without blurring. i wasnt to crazy about the 18-55mm lens at first, due to the fact that i have only used zoom lenses thusfar but it did well. i am planning to get additional lenses when i get some more money, and looking forward to it.
My First DSLR - May 26, 2010
This was my first DSLR. I wanted to buy a high zoom camera back then but I realized that the size of the camera that I wanted to buy was almost the same as this one. So, I decided that I wanted the flexibility of having a camera that has an interchangeable lens system so I went for this.
It's a very good first DSLR. I learned a lot with it, started in the P-mode, then graduated to Av-Mode. I got really good pictures from this and I was able to document significant memories in the early stages of my life with my wife. The pictures were great but I couldn't get anything really useable with shots taken beyond ISO 800. The shot rate is slow so I couldn't follow shooting wild geese, but otherwise, I was able to get really good pics of my friend's then 4 year old son.
I have now since replaced this with a Canon 7D and I've passed this on to a friend but I had great memories of this camera. Looking back, I regretted having given this up. It would've been a nice second, carry-everyday DSLR.
Good beginning SLR Camera - May 20, 2010
I have owned this camera for several months and really enjoy it. The only downfall I can see is the flash unit on the camera. A friend allowed me to use his attachable flash and what a difference. Other than that it takes great pictures nad is fairly easy to use even for beginners like me.
This is the digital SLR camera to buy! - May 16, 2010
The camera is everything the information given said it was. I couldn't be more pleased.
Great camera - Apr 22, 2010
I am really happy with the camera overall. The lens that came with it was rubbish, broke on us twice in under six months and Canon would only fix it once so that sucked. Besides that, it does everything we want it too.
Great camera, LOUSY LENS - Apr 18, 2010
We are very happy, as point-and-shoot parents wanting quality pictures of our kids, with the camera proper. The 18-55mm lens worked very well for about 17 months. Suddenly, without any preceding maltreatment, the auto focus wouldn't work. I couldn't move the lens through the whole zoom range and I could hear something loose inside the lens. Eventually, a piece looking something like a plumber's wrench fell out of the lens. The Canon warranty is only for 12 months and they are asking $95 to repair it. Buyer beware.
An affordable DSLR - Apr 12, 2010
I like this camera a lot. Great pictures and very fast response. Up to 3 pictures a second and only a split second start-up time even after recovering from sleep mode.

Easy to use, only downfall to this one is no video.
