First GPS - Aug 31, 2010
This was my first GPS and I have nothing to compare it to. It powered up quickly and appears to do everything it is supposed to. I've used it in Montana, Wyoming and Kentucky as well as my home state of AZ. I'll use it in CA this coming week and will see if the Traffic router works. I had difficulty trying to pre-program destinations in other states ahead of time and just gave up and waited until I got there.
A big disappointment after my Nuvi 350 - Aug 30, 2010
I bought the Garmin nüvi 755 as a replacement for my 3 year old Garmin nüvi 350, which I had loved. I had hoped to take advantage of new features in the 755, including traffic updates and an updated map.
Unfortunately, this unit suffers from a couple of flaws that make it much less satisfactory to use than my previous nüvi 350. For one thing, the screen seems slow to respond to touch, and no matter how careful I am, it's easy to mistype information. So, I find myself constantly having to hit the "erase" key to re-enter addresses.
The other issue is that the traffic update feature is pretty useless. It seems to be unaware of major traffic jams in the Washington, DC area. When traffic is normal, it seems wildly optimistic of travel times, constantly adding minutes to the expected arrival time - even when I am able to drive the entire trip at posted speeds.
The first unit I bought died after a few days (bad battery), so I exchanged it. Unfortunately, the second unit had the same issues with the touch screen and traffic updates, and only marginally better battery life.
Traffic routing seems accurate and decent. Unfortunately, because of the difficult to use touch screen and inaccurate travel times/traffic updates, I hesitate to recommend it.
Misleading Guarantee - Aug 30, 2010
I purchased the device in May of 2010. One of the main factors in deciding to purchase the 755 was the guarantee of a new map update within 60-days of first using the device in a vehicle. I planned on using the device for a complicated trip in the fall. After I received the device I charged it using the USB connection on my computer and updated the non-map software using WebUpdater. I periodically charged the device in succeeding months, always in my home. I note that the device acquired a satellite despite the fact I never used the antenna and never used it in my car. Finally in late August I used the device for a short trip in my car. The next day I registered the device and applied for the NuMap guarantee; I was clearly within the 60-days of first using the device in a vehicle. After several back-and-forths with Garmin support, I was told I was not eligible because I had acquired a satellite in May even though I was not even trying to acquire a satellite. The language I relied on, "in the vehicle", is meaningless, so buyer beware. I am not happy about Garmin company ethics, especially considering the language of the guarantee and the little effort it would have taken to fulfill the original offer. Kudos to the engineers who designed the device and its software, but bad cess to the people who run marketing. In short, if you buy a Garmin device with the NuMap guarantee, be sure to download the the free map software within 60 days of purchasing the device; do not rely on the plain language of the offer, as I did.
Great tool for trips - Aug 27, 2010
I've only used my GPS once so far on an end of summer trip to Tahoe & Lake Donner. Getting it setup was easy enough but took several hours to download and update it with the current firmware and maps.
It was great for finding places we wanted to go, restaurants, bike shops, our condo, a friends house. It was easy to use and can make driving more fun. The data is not always up to date for points of interest. I suggest calling to verify the address as the GPS may not have the latest info. A bike shop I was looking for had recently moved. I found the shops info using the POI but the address was out of date. I was able to locate the shop using the GPS but had to enter their new address manually. On one occasion, I entered the address of a hotel manually but the GPS couldn't locate it - instead directing us to a location down the street from where we wanted to go. It did find the hotel with the correct location when looking it up using the POI. The 2 addresses, the one I entered and the one from the POI database were exactly the same. I thought it might been pilot error but I verified the address I entered several times. After that, I always used the POI when I could.
I definitely wish I had this for previous trips and won't take any without it.
Disappointed with this GPS - Aug 27, 2010
Prior to this I used a Garmin 650 for several years. Thinking I was due for an upgrade I got lured into all the new bells and whistles this device had. Now that I've been using it for a while I've concluded that it wasn't worth it. Here are my top 4 issues.
- It's very unresponsive especially upon start up. The UI lags and button presses don't always register immediately. This is by far the single most frustrating issues.
- Inaccurate touch screen. I've calibrated this thing a bunch of times without success. Combined with the unresponsiveness this exasperates the lag issues with the user interface.
- Traffic is only somewhat useful. While the traffic is accurate, it takes some time for the data to come in and more often than not, I end up experiencing the traffic before getting alerted by the GPS so I can avoid it.
- The ads. I can't help but think this is the cause of the lag. It's not a deal breaker but I would much rather disable features so I don't get the ads or even pay a fee.
All in all, it was a somewhat expensive lesson to come to the conclusion that a no-frills responsive GPS is all I really need.
Garmin Nuvi 755T - Aug 27, 2010
It's a great device, the 3D view in Minneapolis is awesome! Great lane change feature. Multiple routing is nice.
totally unreliable - Aug 26, 2010
I'm not going to rate the features of the Garmin 755T because my main issue is with the complete unreliability of the unit. On multiple occasions now it has completely misrouted me, mislocated me and is off on the mileage calculations. Several time on a trip I just returned from, it froze in mid-use, when re-booted thought I was at the starting point of my trip, mysteriously changed routing directions in mid-trip (no it was not re-routing me due to traffic), it says to turn for ex in 0.9 miles when you are already at the turning point and does not give enough warining time as to when you will be turning or merging onto another highway etc. I can't recommend this at all because the entire point of a GPS is to get you from point A to point B correctly. Had we followed it's directions, we'd still be hopelessly lost on the florida turnpike!!!
Also- just a suggestion for all GPS makers-- there needs to be a "pause" function so when you're stopping for gas or food, you can pause the unit and then unpause it when you're ready to continue. Unfortunately, when you deviate from the routing for a stop, it goes bonkers telling you to make a u-turn or continue for 3 blks and then do such and such and doesn't always register when you're back on course.
Great when it works, which won't be for long - Aug 26, 2010
I am through with Garmin products. I bought this because it has a large, easy to read screen. It tells you very useful info, such as the speed limit of the road you are on, distance to your next turn, arrival time, etc. If you touch the next turn, or anything else on the screen, it takes you to more info on that item, also very helpful. The voice is clear and easy to understand, and it speaks the street names. You can upgrade to lifetime traffic, which is otherwise not included. However, this thing is complete junk. The first thing that happens, is you lose the voice guidance. The second thing that happens, is the directions become useless. First, it starts telling you to go in the wrong direction, or to go down streets that don't exist. Then it starts telling you to go down a street that exists, but is nowhere near where you are. At one point, it showed on the screen that I was driving through a lake. Unfortunately, these problems showed up just outside of the warranty period, so Garmin wouldn't do anything. My mother got the Garmin 850. The exact same things happened to her unit. First, voice command dropped out, and then it started giving completely false directions. I will never buy a Garmin again.
Good for the Price - Aug 26, 2010
I used the VZ Navigator for years and years on my cell phone and then it started not being able to connect to the 3G Network and no network equals no GPS on my cell phone. So, I bit the bullet and bought a GPS. Garmin came highly recommended from friends and family and they did not steer me wrong. This unit is super user friendly and fast! I am a believer.
Battery Problem - Aug 25, 2010
The battery only stays charged about an hour so the GPS isn't usuable unless plugged in.
It Survived My 6 Day Torture Test - Aug 24, 2010
This a review of the Garmin 755t GPS unit.
I'm a professional driver and I recently had an opportunity to put the Garmin 755t through it's paces on a 6 day agricultural tour from Bakersfield to Monterey. I designed and stored 8 very complex custom routes before I ever left home (one for each day + 2 night runs).
There were several reasons I chose this model:
1. An earphone jack for listening to the directions so as to not annoy my passengers.
2. It speaks the street names - A GREAT FEATURE!
3. Allows customizing and storing up to 10 routes (More or less, see below)
4. Good reviews.
5. Good reputation of Garmin's products.
This was my first time using a GPS, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to get the 755t up and running. It took it about 3-4 minutes to acquire the satellite the first time I turned it on, but now it gets up and running in about 15-20 seconds.
Good points:
1. Good solid feel - Quality construction
2. Very reliable, even in the 105+ degree heat and bumpy back roads
3. Quick turn on and satellite lock
4. Easy to learn to operate, very intuitive
5. Speaks street names - I really liked this feature
6. Earphone jack - useful if you don't want to annoy your passengers
7. Ability to edit and store 10 customized routes
8. Easy to read on-screen graphics - Loved the 3D graphics
9. I really liked the docking cradle. Made taking it with me very easy
10. Many extra features that came in handy - Finding gas stations, etc.
11. Announces destination on right or left - Very nice
12. 4.3" Wide Screen was more helpful than I expected, giving a great view of the surrounding area.
Bad points:
1. Can't change battery - what's up with that - Tom Tom wins this one.
2. Updating the maps is VERY expensive - what's up with that
3. Some times picks an odd route with lots of traffic lights rather than an easier one.
4. In reality it only let me store 8-9 custom routes, maybe because each one had 6-8 stops, but when I tried to store number 10 it would overwrite one of the others, so I ended up just saving 8 custom routes to be safe. However, 8 very long and complex routes ended up working fine for me.
I bought 4 accessories for the 755t:
1. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001J7154S/ref=oss_product
Works great. Allows you to use the unit on AC or charge the battery from AC. The cord is almost 4 feet long, a bit short, but reasonable for the price. Shipped supper fast from Sewell.
2. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001S2RCWI/ref=oss_product
Worth every penny! I've used it in sedans, limos, vans, and mini-coaches. It's just the right size and weight. It never shifted a bit. The base conforms to the shape of the dash and it folds flat in one piece to stash quickly in my bag and move from vehicle to vehicle. Love it, love it, love it!
3. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TLSOFQ/ref=oss_product
Holds both the 755t AND the DC power cable, plus there is a small pouch just big enough to hold spare fuses and 2 earphones (one spare). It makes moving from vehicle to vehicle and stashing in my bag a breeze. Perfect!
4. http://www.scansound.com/M102-Mono-Earbud-Style-Headphones.htm
6 ft cable with a right angle mono plug on the end. Excellent clarity and quality construction with a very comfortable earpiece. You have to buy 2, and with shipping that comes to about $12. Worth it, and you get a spare.
Final thoughts: The 755t met my expectations and I'm was quite pleased with it's overall performance. I found the graphics easy to read (day or night) and the voices pleasant and relatively easy to understand. I used it on average for 14 hours a day 6 days in a row, in extreme heat, in big cities, and over bumpy back roads, and it never failed or needed rebooting. It did sometimes pick a route that seemed odd, but being able to customize the route made that an easy thing to correct.
I didn't have an occasion to try out the traffic feature, and the lane assist feature never activated, but I understand that has more to do with the cities you are in.
I do think it's important to understand the limitations that any GPS unit is likely to have, and simply use it as another tool along with common sense and a bit of pre-trip planning.
The 2 things keeping me from whole-heartedly recommending this unit is not being able to buy a new battery for it, and the expensive map updates. I also think that for many folks one of the less expensive models will do just fine for average driving. However, if you need the ability to customize your route and/or need a headphone jack, then the 755t is certainly worth putting on your short list.
It's OK, but not great! - Aug 24, 2010
One of the reasons I bought this model of Garmin was because the photo shown with the item indicated that the screen would show over the road highway signs as you might see them on the road. It does not show them like that. I've wandered through all the different settings and can not find any way to change the setting so that it will display the road signs. I have a friend whose Garmin does that and she says it is very handy. I was looking forward to this feature but in fact it is not there. Just days after I bought the unit I downloaded the updated maps and took it to Hawaii. While it does a good job pronouncing the Hawaiian roads and towns (as if that were really necessary) it did some really weird things in terms of taking us on a few unnecessary, circuitous routes to get to places. I was very disappointed with that. The other thing it does which is not a huge problem but rather irritating is when you are scrolling through the list of places found (hotels, restaurants, etc) it will randomly start you back at the top and you have to start the scrolling process all over again. I like this product and I did not return it because in our family it is nice to have a second unit and the price was very good so I just stuck with it. I guess my biggest disappointment is not having the big green road signs that go over the highways and tell you which lane to be in are not projected on the screen as the picture would leave you to believe. Other than that is a very suitable unit.
On the plus side, this Garmin has a QWERTY key pad when you are entering addresses or names. That is a nice change over our older model that has the letters in alphabetical order. Who ever thought that was a good idea? This one also does not have the quirky little flip up antennae like our older Nuvi has.
Works Great - Aug 23, 2010
This is my second Garmin and like the last one it also does everything I'd expect it to do. I'm in Los Angeles and rely heavily on it for my job and it has never let me down to date. Yes of course sometimes it takes what you think is a strange route but that's usually due to traffic in this area and it's trying an alternative when the alternative looks faster. The bottom line is that it always gets me where I'm going especially in areas I'm not familiar with. I totally trust it. Like some of the reviews stated... I did have it restart one time when I touched the screen for someting but that's an isolated incident and no big deal. We're dealing with electronics and things will happen no matter what unit you buy. No different than your computer. I bought it for the lane guidance which is very helpful with LA traffic. I also like many of the other added features like the speed limit and speed you're going. Totally satisfied. Great price at Amazon compared to newer units which do basically the same thing. I already have bluetooth which is why I chose the 755t over the 765t or 775t. I also like being able to hear directions through radio when I want to (and it works fine when signal is strong) which is something not available in most newer units. Do your research on features.
Great GPS - Aug 22, 2010
Works great, Easy to use.
I bought this unit refurbished and have used for about a month now. And I love it...Don't even need to carry my itouch around anymore. Just load songs on the SD card and go!!
I do wish however it had tracks (like a handheld) on it and you could have a breadcrumb trail of where your going. I work on the oilrigs and all the locations I go to are not known roads. I wish I could track my way in and out to the rig from main roads.
Other than that I love it!!...so far!!
Never again - Aug 20, 2010
Ok, so I'm an idiot. (Not my first GPS) Got this early Nov. for a birthday present (for 11/25) for the wife. Went on line, set it up... done. Or so I thot. Never realized I didn't register it.
So, Jan 1 comes along and a message comes up, maps out of date. So, try to D/L the maps... not free. Even tho supposedly supposed to be. And no, they won't accept any proof of purchase from anywhere.
Reason being? I never registered it on line so I'm not eligible for the free update. Now, if this was a gift so some folks who aren't on line.. sux being them I suppose.
At any rate, about a month ago it started to hang. Did the whole update again, hold button to left for 8 seconds, etc. etc. Did a reset, lost all favorite places and refuses to take the saved upload.
So in a nutshell their customer service is miles below standard and not even slightly courteous. Never again, Garmin. I'm done.
Verr Good GPS - Aug 19, 2010
Does it all. Excellant display and clear audio. Easy to use, also comes with one free map update. Better than I expected. Excellant price also.
Garmin Nuvi 755 works great - Aug 19, 2010
I love this product. It is much easier to use than the TomTom's I have owned. I also really like the ability to store Audible books and MP3's on it for playback through my car speakers.
Garmin Nuvi 755T - Aug 18, 2010
I bought the Garmin Nuvi 755T two weeks back. Did an extensive research and compared nuvi with several TomTom models. I have had TomTom in the past and decided to buy Garmin for a change. The product is good with reliable navigation capabilities. Unfortunately I had to send the product back due to some technical issues. The GPS would automatically turn off and restart if I try to access 'menu' or other options like navigation, display, music, map, etc while it is navigating. The system shuts down and restarts the moment you touch the screen. It happened to me 3-4 times while I was driving from East Lansing to Chicago. I had a hard time when it happened right after I took an exit in Chicago Downtown Loop.
I am finally deciding to go back to TomTom. Will buy again from Amazon. I am extremely pleased with their excellent customer service.
755T: All in all, it's a pretty good device. - Aug 17, 2010
The Garmin nüvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic replaced a four year old unit that was in need of a map update (the last one was two years ago) and was a pretty basic model. Despite my griping in this review, I think this is the fifth Garmin nuvi that I've purchased (plus a Dakota 20 for trail and waterway) - each unit has pluses and minuses, but is better than the competition's line-up in the same price range. The price is very good, especially for a unit with 3D buildings, multi-route, lane assist and traffic; usually a sign that Garmin is ready to discontinue the model (if hasn't already done so). The screen on the 755t is clear and bright but seems a little less sensitive to touch than the 2xx series. Satellite fix is pretty quick most of the time. The menus and choices are fairly straightforward. Sometimes routing is a bit odd and not entirely trustworthy, even if the road has been in the same place for years: it lost the road in rural/coastal Texas and came up with a strange way to get from A to B and it consistently refuses to find the most direct route to a major location on a Houston freeway (I built a custom route as a work-around). The traffic reporting is a nice feature, although it doesn't recognize the HOV lane as being independent of the freeway. I haven't experienced any of the screen locks reported on some blogs. Garmin's user support is just average: square-wheeled search and resulting cacaphony of responses on FAQ, Captain Obvious replies on email inquiries. The cost of map upgrades is ridiculous, transparently designed to get the owner to buy up (a strategy that works in my case). But all in all, it's a pretty good device - good enough that I just bought another 755T for a different vehicle.
Hey, Garmin, can you provide a traffic-enabled direct-wire cable?
Good Buy - Aug 15, 2010
So far it's been great. Could not download the updated map via the internet because of our ISP. Customer service at Garmin was very nice and helpful but be prepared for a long wait on the phone. They sent out a DVD with the upgraded map ($10 shipping). All-in-all the unit is all that I expected. Our cell phone is not bluetooth ready, so the 755T works for us. Also bought the beanbag mount and I like that better than the window mount. Easier to reach and easier to see. Download and read the review by GPS Magazine. In some ways it's better than the Garmin manual and it really gives one an idea of what the unit will do.
Garmin Nuvi 755/755T So So - Aug 14, 2010
While this product has a better attachment to the windshield and it is easier to remove and replace, the features are not as good as my older TomTom: It does not show miles remaining, the traffic feature is unreliable at best, and while it gives delay on the present route it is taking me, it doesn't know the situation on alternate suggested routes, therefore causing further delays. Map quality is at best shaky...I will go back to the TomTom.
So easy! - Aug 09, 2010
I am not good with electronic things all of them. I also get lost really easy when traveling. I bought the Garmin nuvi and it is really easy to use and has saved me on quick trips out of town. I travel more now than I would have with out it. No need to be affraid just get a Garmin and go!
RD - Aug 09, 2010
This is my 5th Garmin. This unit is the best I have had. The new freatures, especially lane identification on major highways was great.
Great GPS - Aug 08, 2010
Great GPS as long as you ignore the voice directions. I bought this GPS because it could do custom routes. I do a lot of day trips on my motorcycle and I like to plan out the route ahead of time. This feature works great except sometimes it will tell you to do a u-turn instead of left or right turn. If you just follow the pink line it works great. Also if I have to deviate from the route I just watch the pink line and try to get back on it. Once you are back on the pink line it stops doing the recalculating thing.
I also like the MP3 Player. When doing long trips you don't have to keep searching for new radio stations.
Very easy to use - Aug 06, 2010
We were using a Tom Tom xxl for about six months. We took care of it, kept it in a case when not in use, etc.. And yet somehow it managed to break. The screen randomly scrambled one day when we went to use it. A few months later my parents' tom-tom had a similar issue. When I tried to go get it fixed I was told it's cheaper to buy a new one. So rather than investing in another tom-tom I decided to try this garmin.
The interface was just as easy to learn, the voices were much more seamless with pronunciations, and on top of that, the mount is way better, and to top it off, it's a lot more accurate with directions.
The only downside in comparison is the tom-tom has a lot more points of interest.
