Excellent for the price... - Aug 19, 2010

Great camcorder for the price, lots of fun and great moments with the family. As far as for picture taking, I'd give it a C+ even though its a 10mp. All in all, my short experience with this is a very positive one, with a nice smooth transition from miniDV to Flash Card/HD. I Highly recommend this camcorder for someone not wanting to pay a lot of money for a high quality portable camcorder and see this unit very comparable to any camcorder in the price range of $200 to $500 dollar range, truly a steal at $130 and a pleasant way to transition.

Not thrilled, but at this price not unhappy - Aug 01, 2010

Right now the price has been discounted by sixty bucks so the price can't be beat for a hd, pocket camcorder with a 5x zoom.

The picture quality is OK, even indoors, but you have to hold the camera very very steady. The image stabilization does nothing, as far as I can tell. It seems odd that you need a tripod to get steady shots on a camera this light, and so obviously designed for portability.

The camera seems quite flimsy, especially the battery and flash card covers.

Focus is very slow, so anything that is moving is going to be a little blurry until it stops moving, even if the camera itself is totally still.

Despite the relatively low quality, the camera is light weight, easy to use, easy to pocket and carry around, is light enough to be used with the original gorillapod and has plenty of manual settings to help you get the most of it.

I can't recommend it, but it's probably not a terrible purchase for the money.

Update: Just used the camera at the beach, so light was super. The picture quality was very good, color balance was good too. I used the snow & beach scene select. But jitter is still pretty bad. The stabilizer is worthless. You have to hold this camera steady.

Update2: There is no "pause" feature when recording video. You can turn off the recording and then start another recording, which creates multiple files, but you can't pause in the middle of recording and then resume it. For all I know this is common with other pocket camcorders, but it seems odd.

Update3: I used the camcorder to record a school play. This is a challenge for just about any camcorder - recording while sitting back in a dark theater, zoomed in on a brightly lit stage. The CG10 didn't do a phenomenal job, but it also wasn't too bad. Again, anything that moved was blurry. Wide angle resulted in very high contrast, where the theater lights whited out most of the detail. But zooming in, using a tripod, worked well. Features were clear and the color balance was tolerable. The 5x zoom makes a big difference. I can't imagine that the flip, with no zoom, would have recorded anything watchable. BTW the CG10 has a manual focus option that lets you set it to infinity, essentially creating a fixed focus. That worked out well as I'm sure autofocus would have had trouble with the harsh lighting and high zoom.

Awesome picture, slow focus. - Jul 27, 2010

For the money nothing I have seen comes close. Video is awesome, but focus is slow. Still picture quality is acceptable but not on par with my dedicated still cameras. Slow focus aside, the video is beautiful. Camera is easy to use. Well worth the money.

The Little Camcorder that could. - Jul 21, 2010

I needed a camcorder for training purposes. Record, Review, Record again, etc. Didn't have the budget for a mid-price cam and looked at Flip & Kodak models but decided I wanted more. Many members of the yahoo video group really like and recommend this and so after checking around bought it here on Amazon. It's terrific. Portable, good sound and excellent pics/video. Follow the advice on other posts to disable some features. Bought a couple xtra batteries on ebay, a lite-weight tripod here on amazon, and I'm pleased. I'm also particular. BTW, before I'd invest $800-1200 in a prosumer camcorder, I'd wait and watch the development of the DSLR's coming out with xcellent Video capabilities. The prices will drop with scale.

     sexy little camera - Jul 09, 2010

i gave this to my wife, so she can't say i dont buy her anything. she still says it, but now its not true. she loves it because everybody she shows it too oohs and aahs.

its simple and state of the art, and inexpensive. so perfect as a gift to someone you love.

best choice for family - Jul 05, 2010

i bought it one year ago when it was US$200. it's easy to use, portable, beautiful and modern. you should buy one more battery. when taking photo, it should be stabilized. flash is good. it's the best choice for family. i like it.

     Sanyo Xacti CG10 HD camcorder - Jul 04, 2010

I love this device as a video camera. It dual functions as a camera too, but the picture quality is baseline and the lense speed doesn't capture motion very well at all. The 720 p video is usable but it's visibly not 1080 p quality. I just use this to film skateboarding and take the occasional picture. The five star attributes are battery life, ease of use and the small size is perfect. It even feels cool in your hand. Definitely worth the money, get one now while they're cheap before they sell out.

There is NO A/C adapter for this camera - Jul 01, 2010

The owner's manual for the camera incorrectly states that a power adapter is available for this camera, but there IS NO SUCH THING. I was just told this by a representative at Sanyo. There is no such thing as the VAR-A3U adapter, and the VAR-A3EX does not exist either.

Note that the VAR-G8U and VAR-G9U adapters sold on Sanyo's website are only one-half of what you would need. They are only the AC brick, they do not include the insert that is REQUIRED to sit in place of the battery.

You cannot run this camera continuously for longer than the charge of one battery, period. I was told this by the Sanyo representative.

Difficult to hold steady without getting tired - Jun 27, 2010

Great idea, however I did not like the one hand operation, therefore I was disappointed. Great features and price but I wanted something that did not seem like it was work to operate.I returned it.

Excellent For The Price - Jun 02, 2010

I've owned this camera for a couple of months now and have used it often. I chose this camera over similar ones in this price range because of the features and I have not been disappointed. Easy to use once you get to know the menus, and though not perfect by any means it is just right for my needs for an everyday cam. Read the review on CNET for a good overview of all the features and abilities of this camcorder.

I've managed to tweak a fairly decent picture quality by following the advice of the other reviewers here (thank you) and so far have had no problems with it. Very pleased overall, better than I was expecting in fact.

With the optional Sanyo component cable you CAN watch your vids in hi-def.

I have not yet found a battery with longer life than the one provided, but I am still looking... if anyone knows of one, please leave a comment here. I would appreciate it.

     xacti cg10 review - May 28, 2010

Overall I think this camcorder is a better option than the Flips that are out there as of right now.

    Pros:
    - the 5x zoom is great
    -compact
    -very nice LCD
    -battery life
    -stereo audio

    Cons:
    -Poor low light filming
    -sluggish focus sometimes
-I don't like the fact that you have to remove the battery to charge
-battery is used instead of charged when usb is plugged into computer

Great picture quality, optical zoom, easy to use - May 25, 2010

    The good:

    -VERY portable

-Relatively easy to use (works better if you tweak some of the advanced settings, but will be OK if you just point and shoot)

-GREAT picture quality for a camera at this price point

-5x optical zoom (virtually none of these portable video cameras have optical zoom at all)

-Decent quality still photos, which can be taken at the same time you are shooting video

    -Good battery life

    Only one bad:

-The focus quit working the first day I used it. This is apparently a known defect, because Sanyo told me to return the unit without any troubleshooting at all. Disappointing, but they have already credited me for the return and the replacement is on its way.

Great camera for backpacking - May 20, 2010

I took the Xacti on my backpacking trip through Connecticut on the Appalachain Trail the first week of May. We had hot and humid weather and lots of rain. The camera was easy to use. I kept it in a pocket on my shoulder strap so I could easily get it out. The video was clear and crisp. The still pictures were great. When I got home, I edited the video and made a movie using both the video and the still pictures. This camera is so easy to use - even me - a 60 something woman - could use it. I would recommend this to anyone who normally uses a simple digital camera - now you can add video and dazzle your friends.

     Great product - May 09, 2010

There are so many pluses to this product. it is important to note that I never owned a video camera or still camera before (except for a cellphone), but I really could not expect more from this camera. It is extremely easy to use, it turns on really fast and is ready to shoot. The video is really clear, but some of my still pics come out blurry. Maybe i have to mess around with the settings, but it seems like you have to keep your hands really steady and wait like 2 full seconds after hearing the picture snap. It's very portable and sleek looking. I gave mine to my mom for mother's day, but plan on buying another for myself.

Great product for the price - May 03, 2010

I read all of the reviews for the Sanyo VPC-CG10 and although there are a few things that could be better for the pricing there is no better product in this class. I have taken both still pictures and hi-def video and to average photographer the quality is just fine. Home movies, graduations, whatever you need it for it just works. If you want professional grade this isn't your camera but for the average Joe it works great and the price can't be beat.

price is right for features... - May 02, 2010

You can do a lot with this baby!! And it's cool looking. Took it to The Masters. It won't freeze the clubhead..but the Still AND Video options give you plenty to see.

     Great customer service - Apr 19, 2010

I wish I could tell you about the camera however when mine was shipped it was lost somewhere along the way. However I did get a full refund. This took a little time but only due to the holidays.

Great for home videos and capture that family moment! - Mar 28, 2010

This camera is perfect to capture that memorable family moment... in hi-def! Owned this for about a month or probably more. I gave 3 stars for battery life because it only gave me an hour, but bought extra batteries at ebay for [...] only for 2 pieces. I gave 4 stars for stabilization because it gets really shaky at times unless you turn on the shake control thingy function.

I would definitely recommend this camera!

I bought the AmazonBasics Universal Camera Case FF (Black) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VPE1XE for it and it fits plus more of your accessories!

     Very nice. - Mar 20, 2010

I got this camera for my boyfriend and he love's it we use it all the time.
we are both Entertainers so we do record alot in the theather with crazy light and doring rehersal with very low lights and it always works never falt.
I have use is few times as well and its very easy in use very light the batary life is good.I do recomend to get 16 Gb memory card.
    Highly Recomend!
For this price and a small video camera like this its all you need .

     excellent - Mar 18, 2010

So lightweight I forget it's in my purse, easy enough to use that my 12 year old didn't need to read the directions, very good picture quality.

Great camera for the price - Mar 16, 2010

This is the first hd camcorder I've owned or used. I picked it up very cheap open box from Amazon. Overall I'm very happy with it. Picture quality is better than I expected after reading other users reviews. Many people have complained about poor low light performance but I really have not had an issue with it. Will it look like an nfl game? No, it's a $200 camera. But I'm quite impressed with how good it does look. The videos on youtube definitely do it justice, check them out before you buy to see if it's what you're looking for.

I was disappointed to learn that I can't used it as a webcam with Mac OS, that feature is windows only. Haven't had any other compatibility issues however. Mac OS recognizes it quickly as a card reader, transfers are as speedy as you'd expect with a usb 2.0 device. Videos load into iMovie/quicktime without any issues.

Build quality is so-so. Cheap plastic everywhere, but it doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart. No large panel gaps, which is nice. The little door that covers the SD card slot seems flimsy, must be opened with care. The battery cover can be a little finnicky as well. The hinge on the screen looks and feels pretty robust though, and the buttons click/slide nicely. Essentially everything you use every time you turn on the camera seems well designed, but the secondary functions and less used stuff is not quite as good.

I think it's a very good purchase, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good inexpensive camcorder.

     Camera is alright - Mar 07, 2010

It works well but in low light it terrible, and the video becomes very filled with particles. Would recommend if camera is being used mostly for natural and a lot of light area, the pictures are alright, but the battery life is CRAP, you NEED to buy a battery for this camera if you want to record for more then 10 mins without killing the camera.

NOTE: Cannot Be Used For STREAMING - Mar 04, 2010

This camcorder can NOT be recommend if you wish to connect it to your computer. Especially if you are on a Mac.

Page 150 of the users' manual states that the camera can ONLY be used as a video source for computers running Windows Vista or Windows XP. Though it comes with a USB cable, it does not recognize a MAC (I can also vouch for this myself. The manual does not lie. I can speak first hand. I am returning mine tomorrow).

FURTHERMORE, even if you are on a Windows machine, the optical zoom is disabled when in "PC Camera" mode (To quote page 150 of the users' manual verbatim: "The zoom cannot be used with the PC Camera function."). So the whole 5x optical zoom is worthless if you wish to use to to stream video (the only reason I bought it).

If you intend to ever use this as a video source for your PC computer, DO NOT. And if you're on a MAC you CANNOT.

    Buyer beware.

Oh, and the whole thing about not having a power cord and only working off the battery, that sucks pretty bad too.

In short: This thing is a piece of junk.

nice camera but not too good in low light - Feb 20, 2010

Well after reading a ton of reviews, all i have to say is that you get what you pay for. I must say that for 160$ this camera is decent. The picture quality is decent with a good even amount of light but however, it becomes very grainy when you film it in low light. What I really loved about it was that I was able to just pop the SD card out ,stick it straight into the computer and just drag and drop the videos I wanted to take off. This camera is okay and I gotta say that I like it

     Love it.. - Feb 14, 2010

An excellent go between for a camera and video recorder. Picture quality is very nice.
