    Gameplay
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like all the previous releases in the Super Mario Bros. franchise is a side-scrolling platforming game where players collect coins as they attempt to make their way through progressively more difficult game levels using their ability to time jumps over obstacles and avoid a slew of enemies. But although the game contain several well-deserved nods to previous games in the series in the form of iconic characters like Mario, Luigi and two Toads, as well as familiar enemies, sound effects and levels, it is not simply another trip down Mario Bros. memory lane. Taking advantage of the flexibility and power of the Wii and Wii Remote, New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to preserve the retro experience that fans love about the series, while adding new game features. Notable additions among these include, expansive play levels and new powerups and characters, but by far the most important, and in fact game-defining new feature is simultaneous multiplayer.

    A Franchise First: Simultaneous Multiplayer
Since the very first Super Mario Bros. game took the world by storm in the late 1980s gamers anxious to get into the action have patiently and impatiently waited their turn as the infamous 'player 2.' Those days are no more. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii players can now navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time, on the same level, at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.

Controller Choices Via the Wii Remote
In another nod to the series' Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) roots, the Wii Remote controller used with New Super Mario Bros. Wii is held sideways, allowing for easy, classic inputs using the D-pad to direct playable characters, the 1 button to jump and 2 button to spit out projectiles like snowballs and fireballs. In addition, players can access powerups with their choice of either the push of a button, or by shaking the Wii remote, again demonstrating the perfect merging of classic gameplay and modern game design which is New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

    Key Game Features

    • Supports 2-4 players in multiplayer mode.
    • Mario, Luigi and two Toads are all playable characters, while many others from the Mushroom Kingdom make appearances throughout the game. Players can even ride different Yoshi characters and use their tongues to swallow enemies – or their fellow players.

     New Mario Wii - Aug 31, 2010

The new super Mario Wii is terrible. It would be a lot of fun, if we didn't have to go back to the first entry into the game every time Mario is killed. A person can repeat a difficult game many, many times. An idiot planned this game.

One Big Missed Opportunity - Aug 23, 2010

To note - I've only played up to the 3rd World. If anything changes as I progress through the game, I'll update this review. But right now, I'm just too bored with the game to continue on.

So basically, this game is an updated mix-up of earlier Mario games. Here's a break-down:

Super Mario Bros: The individual levels, some of the enemies, and the overall difficulty level are on-par with SMB. Many of the original enemies have returned with little change, such as the Hammer Bros., Bullet Bill, Koopa Troopas, the Piranha Plant, and of course Goombas. Many of the levels mirror those of the original as well, with tight-jumps that require a good judge of distance and even the castle maze from the last level. Mario's death and death music are also from SMB. So is the Underworld Theme.

Yoshi's Island: The collection of red coins and Dragon coins are both present, as are variations of the mini-games. Yoshi's ability to float, and the ability to jump-stomp are also here. A magikoopa from Yoshi's Island, probably Kamek, returns to aid the Koopalings in boss battles just like he did with the bosses in YI.

Super Mario World: The map screen/overworld, some of the levels, and some of the enemies return from SMW. The Ghost Houses are here, too. The save feature, first introduced in SMW I believe, also returns, with an added quick-save feature.

The quick-save feature doesn't actually work for me, but when I can save after each mini-fortress or boss, it doesn't really matter and is largely unneeded.

Super Mario Bros. 3: The Koopalings, first introduced in SMB3, are updated and brought back as bosses of each region. Other aspects from SMB3 that are present are: the Koopa Airship, the matching card game, the Hammer Bros on the map screen, both the item and game toad houses, the way the map screen itself functions, power-up collection and use, Mario Suits, and probably many other things I can't recall right now.

    Why this isn't a 5 Star game . . .

    1. Yoshi is way too scarce. He's only in a handful of levels, and he cannot (to my knowledge) be used outside of those levels. That's not okay when riding Yoshi is half the fun. Super Mario World had the perfect balance of Yoshi-use, and this game totally screwed that up. I took off an entire star for poor Yoshi management.

    2. You have to actually drop Toad in order to go through a pipe. Why? What possible reason could there be for this?

    3. The music, excluding a few updated tunes like SMB3's Hammer Bros. Battle Theme, was uninspiring, bland, and just awful. And there wasn't enough variety. After the first handful of stages in the first region, I was beginning to wonder if there would ever be a change in music.

    4. Variety of gameplay. So far, it's almost the exact same formula as SMB3 - stage, stage, stage, toad house, stage, overworld enemy, mini fortress, stage, toad house, stage, boss.

That was fine 20 years ago on a system with limited resources; it's not fine today on a system that could have done a lot more if the creators wanted to go so retro. They went TOO retro, I think . . . and failed to add enough new and novel ideas that would have augmented the old formula AND showcased the Wii. Yes, the graphics are nice. But, they probably aren't anything the Gamecube could not have pulled off. Possibly even the N64, to be honest. And that's sad that they didn't take full advantage of the Wii.

    5. Controls. The return to the original controls is great. But why not at least use the B button when it's RIGHT THERE!? One of my fingers even rests on the B button during gameplay, so why wasn't it utilized at all? I get the A button not being used - it's a little awkward to reach, but the B button? Yoshi could have thrown eggs with that button, or it could have been used to zoom in or out. Another missed opportunity.

    6. It's not Super Mario World. Any game that tries so hard to recreate the fun of earlier games needs to be at least as good as Super Mario World, and then it can build on that. But this game just doesn't live up to SMW, or SMB3 for that matter. What made those games 5-star games was the fact that they both pushed the envelope, and implemented fresh ideas and new ways of doing things. And they both had plenty of variety throughout the game.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii didn't do that. It simply relied on previous incarnations and really only added a few shakes of the controller. And that's okay . . . for a 3 star, [...] game that's nothing more than an update on the classics.

But to call it 'New'? No. Not even close. More like a Super Mario All-Stars Wii.

Still, this is a quality game that a great deal of effort went into. So despite its failure to surpass previous installments, and despite it being geared toward younger children, it still deserves 4 stars.

Another strong entry in the mario series - Aug 22, 2010

As outlined in the product description, this game plays very much like the original Super Mario Bros. (or perhaps most like Super Mario 3), but it has sharp, colorful, detailed graphics that are at home on the latest Nintendo console. If you're a moderately skilled gamer, you'll likely find that playing alone is much easier than playing simultaneously with others. When others are involved, it's very easy to knock other players off ledges, or otherwise interfere with carefully timed jumps. But if you're not playing too seriously, trying to gather every last coin and bonus, I find that the frenzied gameplay of having multiple players is actually more fun than going solo.

     Love Mario Bros. - Aug 21, 2010

Very fun game to play. I purchased this game for my 5 y/o nephew. I played for hours with my nieces and nephew the day I received the game. Had to buy another copy for myself.

Brings back great memories, frustrations, new surprises, and playing with friends! - Aug 21, 2010

We have been wanting this game for awhile. First of all, it's great that you can play with up to 4 players at the same time, helping or hindering. Quickly we were having fun recognizing level/locations, characters from all the previous Mario games with enhanced graphics. It was a blast trying to remember how to do certain things or beat bosses. Of course lots of frustrations as well, but no controller throwing like when I was a kid. This game is a lot of fun and anyone who has played the originals and liked them will love this. Of course it's a great game for people new to it as well.

I'm a huge fan of the original and this sold me. - Aug 16, 2010

Nintendo has done a great job integrating the qualities of Mario Bros. 1-3 and Super Mario World from SNES. The game graphics are rounded and made to be more fitting for the Wii. It integrates classic Mario with a twist of the Wii. I kept playing the game for 3 days almost straight to beat the game. All the levels have their own different challenges that makes the game unique. I recommend this game to anyone who was a fan of the original and would like to see the new twists they've put on the game.

     Fun :) - Aug 16, 2010

This game is very fun :) if you played the original, you'll like this one. I like how they incorporate the wii motion control. One of our friends played most of the day one Sunday and he wants to come back for more!!

I love Mario since he was just a jumper! - Aug 14, 2010

This is where Nintendo gives the finger to the rest.
NSMB makes you want to buy 3 more wiimote just so you can have a super match with your friends, either coop or against each other. I wonder why don't we have more games like this, one scenario 4 characters running around!
No, its not a kids games, not by far, since albeit cute, it turns out to be a hard games, specially the bosses. We finished the last word by playing 4 people and although a little confusing at times, it helps to have a back up player to help you out.
Some new things beside multiplayer, are the new suits (the propeller, the penguin), and the Super Guide (die a few times in the same level the game show you how to beat it or it will beat it for you) add to the enjoyment of the game.
The hidden treasures, the music, the toad houses and the big coins collecting are things we Mario fans are used to see but enjoy them every time. If you don't get a game guide, prepare yourself to do the games over and over to make sure you got everything, and of course, be able to unlock world 9!!!!

     Side Scroller Extreme - Aug 14, 2010

This game is a wonderful return to the side scrollers most of us loved as children. And while the difficulty has been slightly intensified, the fun factor has as well; thanks mostly in part to perfected controls and the multiplayer addition. If you find the game too advanced in later levels to be much fun to play by yourself, it's still fun to get a few friends together and laugh about what a mess it is trying to all make it through a single level without losing all of your lives. The ability to drop in and out at will is splendid as well. The game has one of the best ending boss battles to be found in any Mario game. And the large coin collecting challenges which earn you access to bonus stages will keep you playing long after you've beaten the game. This game is a definite throwback to the golden days of early gaming; updated with some clever control schemes, beautiful landscapes and an excellent soundtrack serving as icing on this cake. So pretend it's your birthday and buy one of your own.

     Another Disappointment - Aug 13, 2010

Background: I haven't played vid games in about a decade, but we recently bought a wii. I purchased the Mario Galaxy games, as well as paper Mario, Super Mario Bros, and Super Smash bros. And after playing the Galaxy games, which I loved, I just can't stand the other Mario games I bought. So much effort and creativity went into the Galaxy games, that when I put in one of the other games, I am totally bored. This game is a perfect example.

Super Mario Bros gameplay is pretty much what I remember Mario games being like 10-20 years ago: 2-d, with very very primitive graphics and very very minimal music composition. Hop, stomp, flip around, repeat till done level. There also isn't anything new in this game that I don't remember from old Mario games. I guess with it being 2010, and this being a full priced game I was hoping that it would have recieved the same amount of development as the Galaxy games.

So, for me, Super Mario Bros is boring, with poor music and graphics and nothing new. In fact, it looks and plays like something that was released on the SNES back in the early 90's.

     THIS IS WHY I OWN A WII !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Aug 09, 2010

This game is the best game i have for the wii. Once I got it i played and played it. I beat the game a couple of days ago. Everybody needs this game because its challenging and fun. For the price it makes it better. The people who say this game is bad is weird. I want everybody who reads this to comment on it. Thanx.

     A++++ totally awesome. - Aug 08, 2010

What a perfect update to such a classic. My daughter loves it...even though she has trouble playing but give her time and she'll figure it out...we spend time playing this game with her and we love the team work you have to do in order to make it through. A nice change from the original.

Multiplayer makes the difference - Aug 08, 2010

For anyone who has played any of the classic Mario games, you'll know what to expect here. It's a combo of Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES), Super Mario World (SNES), and New Super Mario Bros. (DS). It's got that old school charm, Yoshi, and the big coins.

While this is a good thing most of the time it also starts to feel a bit shallow, the game just doesn't feel as new and inventive as it could (e.g. Super Mario Galaxy). Just more of an iterative version of the last with improvements here and there. The biggest of those changes turns out to be both a joy and a source of frustration - multiplayer. While you can now enjoy Mario with your friends and have a good time doing it, you're also likely to get a bit irritated with anyone not at a similar skill level, especially considering the fact that you can "accidentally" kill your teammates. The other sore spot here is that there's no online multiplayer, it really is just a shame and a true sign of the shortcomings that Nintendo's online experience has in comparison to XBOX 360 and PS3.

One really nice thing about the game is that it's approachable for those who don't regularly game, the simple controls, bright colors, and straight forward game play mean that even casual gamers can do this. Again, if you're playing with someone less familiar with a controller it might lead to some form of frustration (I've even seen people get into mini arguments) but just try and leave the more serious dedication and such to playing alone and you'll be fine.

Overall it's a very nice game and the shortcomings are largely part of the inherent charm in the game (online aspect aside) and is more than made up for by the price, $40.

    Pros:
    + Simple yet challenging fun
+ Feels like a very complete Mario game, very satisfying
    + Multiplayer

    Cons:
    - Multiplayer lacks online and can lead to issues with teammates
    - Lacks any real sensation of newness

super cool wii game - Aug 05, 2010

This is a really fun game. I'm having a lot of fun and it reminds me of Yoshi's Island. I'm on level 4 and it's really fun and challenging. Nick Clem - Age 6

     Love Mario!!! - Aug 05, 2010

It was for my dad but I never let him play. It is so funy and entertaining. Also puechase the strategy guide for secret items and exits!!!

Great family game when it works - Aug 04, 2010

We are fairly new to Wii. We got our system for Christmas last year. I bought this game in March and was actually really excited about it because I always had the best time with the original Mario. We've had a blast playing it. After a couple of months, we started getting disc error messages. I noticed some scratches on the disc, just along the outside edge of the CD in a perfectly circular pattern. We don't allow our kids to change out the discs, we do it for them. The games are just too expensive not to take some precautions to prevent scratches. So how the scratches got there, I have no idea. I searched all over Nintendo's website, following all trouble shooting tips, but still got the error. Finally I called them, because I read that they'd replace a game in certain situations if it had been less than 90 days. According to my receipt, we'd had it for 87. But they wouldn't replace it and couldn't tell me how it was getting scratched in that way. They offered to buff it and polish it for us, for about the same amount as a brand new game. I said no thanks. I sent it to another CD/DVD/Game buffing place I'd read about, and had it done for a fraction of the cost. All scratches were gone, and it worked great. For about two weeks. Now the same circular scratches have appeared on the disc again, and we're getting the error again. It has not happened to any of our other games. I'm extremely disappointed because right now, this is our family's favorite game to play together, and we have to stop playing for errors. I've done some searches and it appears this could be a flaw with the game because I've read so many other stories of the same problem. I refuse to buy another disc if this is definitely a flaw. It's a great game, it's just a shame we're having so many problems with it.

Fantastic Multiplayer That Will Take You Back - Aug 02, 2010

A lot of reviewers have broken down the gameplay specifics about why this game is great, so I won't get into that. I just wanted to put up another positive review for this game because it is so incredibly well done. This is why Nintendo is still such a major player in the Video Game industry. They keep reinventing themselves in new, and incredibly fun ways. They took everything that was awesome about the NES/SNES/N64 classics and put them into this game along with new twists. They also did an incredible job playing to the strengths of the wii remote (ex: shaking the wii mote to fly with the propeller helmet - a seemingly difficult sounding controller manuever- is so easy and fun you wonder why there isn't a flying option in every wii game).

Play this game with 3 friends that grew up playing the Super Mario Brothers series and you will not only end up tearing up from all the great memories it conjures up, you also will be amazed at how fresh and exciting the gameplay is.

     I got what I asked for - Jul 31, 2010

The game arrived on-time and in new condition. My sisters play it constantly, which I think is a little bit better than watching TV all day because at least they're interacting with it! As far as video games go, this one's great.

Why this game is a hit - Jul 30, 2010

There are a few important reasons why this game is such a hit:

    1. Constant action. There is no down time in this game. It is constant.

    2. Fast learning curve. It will take the average player only a few minutes to get comfortable with the interface.

    3. Clear objectives. This game has almost no plot! Get the princess and do so by moving through dozens of cartoonish worlds.

    4. Excellent multiplayer. They made it work. It is a blast to play this with others.

    5. Nearly unending playability. This game will keep you coming back. I can't imagine getting bored of the gameplay. Angry and frustrated, yes, but never bored!

     best mario game i played! - Jul 29, 2010

It came to me in a perfect condition played with it the same day I got it and its a great great game.love how you can play with 4 people, its just a party game.I recomend this game to everybody.

Great Game, but it is so fustrating sometimes! - Jul 22, 2010

This game is fun, but once you get into newer worlds it gets a lot harder. I would not reccomend this to anybody who hasn't had 1+ Year(s) of experience with the Wii. The controls are diffrent. Insted of A it is two and insted of B it is 1. It is very confusing until you understand how to play! This game is also very, very fustrating. When I couldn't make a Castle or fortress in World Two with 5 lives, I added another player. Well, sort of. See I just let Player 2 remote just sit. That way If I loose I have another person. When you get 1 life for both just press A on the one you would like to have 1 life. Then, let the other one Die. It works pretty good. Although, I have gotten up to 99 continues. When I get more than that it stays at 99. I'll never give up with this game!

     After the Price Drop It's A Steal - Jul 21, 2010

    The Skinny:

+ New low price, practically underpriced at less an $40
+ Excellent graphics for a Wii game. Bright and colorfull, with a hefty dose of imagination, New Super Mario Bros. Wii provides a visual feast you won't soon forget. It's this kind of attention to detail and imagination that has made the series so popular.
+ The game is a whole lot of fun. The levels and power-ups are creative and inspired, and the 4-player option adds a new dimension(and serious replayability) to the game.
+ The game is simple enough to be easily approachable to new players, but deep, rewarding and challenging enough to engage a hardcore gamer. Truly, fun for all ages and walks of life. This is what a "family" game should be.
+ This is a classic style of game reimagined faithfully and effectively. There is a lot of nostalgia here for older gamers.
    - No online play to speak of. What year is this again? Even just leaderboards would have been nice. Even if it were available though, this is a game best played with friends in person. Perhaps it isn't much of an omission.

    The Verdict:

An instant classic. If you own a Wii, you should own this game. Games with this kind of craftsmanship are rare, and your lucky to find 1 game made with this level of quality in a year. With price drops on this title all over, now is the time to buy if you haven't already.

     terabal!!!!!!!!!!! - Jul 21, 2010

this game seems like it was meant for people who have never played mario games it is no fun at all if you've played the smb1, smb2, and smw the game is sortaf like smb 3 one of the most anoying fetures in the game is the music, in it the music will say "what" up to 4 times in a row and when it does the items, mario/luigi/toad, all the enimes(pardon the spelling), even the bosses will DANCE! to the music. if i could i would not even give this 1 star

     Super Mario Updated!! - Jul 21, 2010

This Wii version brings back great memories of the old original Super Mario on Nintendo 64 but with better graphics & sounds!! Well worth buying!! Fun & challenging!

     READ THIS - Jul 20, 2010

Not only does NEW Super Mario Brothers destory lives. NEW Super Mario Brothers is worse than any illegal substances or liver damage after an alcoholic binge. And the thing that scares me most about New Super Mario Brothers is that it's socially accepted; It is currently avaible in most parts of the world. Nintendo has destroyed the life of many people decades ago, and now they've planted more seeds of destruction to destroy the lifes of our children. If you people had any brain cells left.. you would not purchase nor allow any Nintendo products in your household.

I have a friend named Phillip, he was once addicted to these terrible Mario games.. It started like it starts with all of you people. It started with ONE Mario game, ONE GAME. And his family didn't help him, no, they enabled him. They joined him as he literally drove his life into the ground via Mario Kart. -- But then I HELPED him, I SAVED HIM, just like I can save all of you.

So when you go to your local Gamestop or any retailer that sells Videogame, when the cashier suggests you purchase a Nintendo game I want you to just say "NO".
