Fun but Too Buggy to Recommend - Aug 31, 2010

Our family has enjoyed all of the Lego games on Wii and being fans of the Harry Potter stories we were really looking forward to this game.

The gameplay is excellent and a nice improvement over what was becoming very formulaic in the Lego series. The adherence to the stories is admirable, the environments spot on and the bits of humor inserted are very welcome. All in all, the design, writing and gameplay are all excellent. The split screen carry over from Indy 2 was a really nice touch. It's too bad that the great work of all of those writers, designers and programmers was wasted.

This game was shipped long before it was ready. Travellers Tales apparently fired their QA dept. before this game shipped, or else they just didn't bother giving the game to them. We've had multiple instances of saved games being lost, characters stuck in endless loops requiring losing a level, freezes requiring reboots and some levels that become unplayable upon beginning them. You can't restart the level because they've been auto-saved at a bug.

I can picture the scene in a conference room: "The game isn't ready." "I don't care, we have to ship." "It's buggy." "I don't care, we have to ship."

Well, TT, I do care. I spent my $50 for something you knew was defective.

Fool me once, shame on you.

There won't be a second time. I will never purchase another title from your company.

lots of fun with a few glitches - Aug 28, 2010

This is my third Lego game on the Wii. I also have Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones. I have spent more time playing this one over and over. I actually never finished Indiana Jones because I did not enjoy it as much as Star Wars. This one really captured my interest so much I have gone from beginning to end several times. That said, I have run into some glitches where I got stuck in spots that make me manually shut down my Wii but the fun of the game outweighs it. You just learn not to go into those spots.

If you know the books but not the movies, you might find some of it confusing because it relies more on the movie story lines than the books. They have made a few changes to make it more kid-friendly but I don't think those were necessary. I still have had a lot of fun playing it.

Wii Version: Fine Play, lacks heavily in graphics - Aug 27, 2010

We have a PS3 and Wii. My 5 year old loves the Lego Games, so I have a hours of "daddy can you help me" experience with Lego Star Wars, Indiana Jones 1 (&2), and Batman (all for the PS3). We got Harry Potter for the expecting that the "Wii wand" would fit well with a the concept.

The Good: my son loves it and has little/no problem with using the Wii controls to navigate.

The Bad: the graphics are notably lacking. I am no graphics snob, by any means, but they are very, very poor compared to PS3. Some may say of course they are and, yes, we expected some degradation. But if I had to choose again, I would not choose the Wii version (and I much prefer Wii for my son, over PS3, generally). Also, there seems to be little use of the Wii wand as a "wand" in the game. I'm not sure why I expected that one would wave the wand around as if it were a real one, but, thus far (about 1-2hrs in) there is none of that. That would be cool though right, so maybe I am missing how to do it, or some vital "option" to turn on - if so, then the Wii version has only the single glaring graphics issues.

The Summary: the game play is very fun. The game itself is great. My son loves it and doesn't notice any of the "bad" I listed above. Just be forewarned: if you get this for the Wii, it does not look crisp, smooth, or flashy, by any means whatsoever (enough so that I bothered to write a review).

     Harry Potter Lego - Aug 25, 2010

The game has great lego graffics. Just as good as Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones. If your younger kids are Harry Potter fans, this game is great. My 7 year loves it and can play for hours. Even my 11 year likes to play it with him.

     Fantastic! - Aug 21, 2010

I recently bought this game for my 9 year old's birthday. He loved it! There so many fun levels and I love that it requires some strategic thinking.

     Lego fun - Aug 20, 2010

I had so much fun playing this game. It was a little more difficult than the other lego games. You are not able to unlock a lot until you hit the final year. There are quite a few glitches, but it didn't distract too much from the game.

Another fun Lego game - Aug 20, 2010

If you enjoy the other Lego games, you'll love this one. Also fun if you're a first time Lego player and haveread the books.

     Excellent Game! - Aug 18, 2010

As a fan of the LEGO video games, this one does not disappoint. It is a little different than the others and this is more logic/puzzle based rather than fighting. The controls are also more polished than previous game.

     Love Lego HP - Aug 17, 2010

I have played a few of the other Lego games and this one is just as fun! I like how the years are divided up. I have not finished the game yet I'm halfway through year 4 but I've loved this. Great for kids and any Harry Potter fan. Easy playing great for children.

Have Lego Wii games jumped the shark? - Aug 11, 2010

Each iteration of the Lego franchise for the Wii has brought something new to the table. Lego Star Wars was the original and, honestly, still the best. It was filled with colorful characters and long, well-paced levels with clear objectives. Indiana Jones brought a new level of interacting with the environment and some genuinely striking scenery. Batman introduced a targeting system that increased the interactivity required. Lego Harry Potter, however, seems to attempt to add a level of mystery by way of confusion. Objectives are completed by accomplishing basically random acts. Maybe you need to light something...maybe you need to destroy a flower pot....maybe you need to shoot the cabinet or the sink. The result is that, WAY more so than the other games in the series, you need to arbitrarily and thoroughly shoot and/or levitate any and every object on the screen to hopefully have something you do cause something to unexpectedly happen so you can get out of the room and move along the story. That gets unfun pretty quick. The other new addition to the Lego franchise is the split screen. It's horrendous. In the previous games, when the player characters would separate, the view would pull back to keep them both in view until it reached a certain practical limit. In this game, when two player characters separate, the view will split the screen leaving each player with a restricted view that makes it hard to see what you're doing and where the other person is.

So, the Lego aspect of the game was a marginal failure. As far as the Harry Potter part, that too was disappointing. I was looking forward to this game. Having seen what the developer did with Morocco and Venice in Indiana Jones, I was expecting an unprecedented replica of Hogwart's to give fans something to revel in. Instead, the rooms and levels are very disjointed. It feels like rooms are arbitrarily stitched together. And instead of being cool and goth, the castle sets are flat and drab. The game is also short. I couldn't believe it when my daughters ended up in the room with Fluffy, the three-headed dog, and began the final leg of the first movie.

It gets a 3 but that's mostly for the effort of at least trying to add another great fiction to this franchise. But if this is a trend and they don't return to what made the previous games so great, this could, indeed, be where the Lego video game franchise jumped the shark.

     Too many glitches! - Aug 11, 2010

I've played and enjoyed a number of the Lego games on the Wii, but I have found the Harry Potter game lacking in a number of ways:

    1. The game contains a number of unpassable and uncorrectable glitches, which can negate all your hard work. Progress in the name is marked by collecting gold blocks; however, at least one of the blocks has a known glitch--it does not appear and will keep the player from completing the game. Not cool. Google the problem as other have documented it.

    2. The game is relatively mindless wandering. Even the end-of-the-level battles are relatively easy. For the most part, the player wanders around the world shooting and shaking everything looking for all the hidden items.

On the positive, I enjoyed seeing the different places around Hogwarts.

If you love Harry Potter, you will love this game - Aug 10, 2010

This game cycles through the first four years of Harry's life at school and outside of school and all his adventures. There are funny surprises along the way just like all the Lego series games. The control is a bit hard to switch from spell to spell by holding down the C button and cycling through what is needed. Other than that, a totally enjoyable game.

     This game is a blast! - Aug 08, 2010

Lego Harry Potter is a perfect game for all ages and it has plenty of replayability so i reccommend it for anyone. Like all LEGO games (except Lego Battles) this is a fun, interactive game for anyone. You should buy it.

Fantastic Game for Kids and Adults - Aug 08, 2010

Like all of the Lego series games, this is a fun game for both kids and adults. What's really nice is the fact that the characters never die, they just lose their coins. This means there is no frustration of starting a level all over again.

My son is 5 and I feel he has learned a lot about problem solving and eye-hand coordination by playing these Lego games. There are plenty of opportunities to use problem solving skills to complete the level. There are hidden objects to collect and opportunities to go back and improve your scores, gather more coins, and purchase items for the game. My son frequently guides me on what needs to be done.

This Harry Potter game is full of fun, but there is a glitch in one of the levels. For some reason, none of the enemies show up and there is no way to clear the level. There is a fix, though. Just use your favorite search engine and search for the level in question. There are plenty of sites that will teach you how to bypass the glitch and play the level properly.

Best Lego Game Yet - Aug 06, 2010

The reviews are true, this is the best Lego video game yet, especially if you are a Harry Potter fan. The only drawback is that it's a little buggy at times and certain blocks can get "stuck," forcing you to restart the game without saving.

     Another great LEGO video game, however . . . - Aug 05, 2010

The LEGO Wii series has done it again with a great adaption of the first four movies. It accurately follows the plot with the LEGO series traditional funny twists. You can be all different characters (even scabbers and crookshanks) and use magic and buy spells with fun abilities (like turning someone's hair into flowers). However, there are some disappointments. Not all spells can be used and how in the world did they create a game where you cannot play quidditch!!!! Overall, though it is a great game. Particularly useful is that the screen splits when two players play in separate areas so one person can be collecting coins in one area while another is creating a mini-kit. You really appreciate this when you play with your older brother who does not wait up for you!!!! If you love Harry Potter, video games or LEGO, you will love this game. If you love all three, you will lose your mind!!!! Max

     Magically Addictive - Aug 04, 2010

I have always been a Lego fan since a small child and the video games help me relive those olden days. Also being a Harry Potter fan, this game is a most. It is not a serious type game, like the lego games before it, it pokes fun in certain ways. The visuals of hogwarts is amazing, along with the sound track and all the fan favorite characters, this is an awesome game. I found it to be very addictive and it was hard to put down once I started playing. The cool thing about lego games is that you can play as other characters and not just the main ones, being a Snape fan, I had a blast playing a Snape as I back tracked to find hidden objects.
I will say that one negative thing about all the characters in the game, being a lego game most of the characters look the same. So playing as a regular student in Hogwarts wasn't the best but I have a feeling most people, when chosing a character to play, probably would choose a main character.
It is just a fun game. I believe it is one of the best lego games to date and I can't wait until Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 comes out.

     Fun but unstable - Aug 03, 2010

No Wii game I've ever played has had so many glitches, problems or crashes. It's fun, but I've come to expect far better from Wii games than this has provided.

     A Magical good time! - Aug 03, 2010

Finally! We waited a while for this one to finally come out! It's lots of fun! My 6 yr old, 9 yr old and 40 yr old love this game! :)

     My 5yo loves this game=) - Aug 02, 2010

This game falls in line right along with the other themed Lego games. We have them all...Indiana Jones, Batman, Star Wars, and this one and the thing that stands out about this one is that when you're playing 2 players, it's actually split screen when you are far away from each other and when you come together it's back to one. The others don't have this feature, so I figured it was worth noting. I know that the recommended age is for older children, but my 5yo plays this with his daddy and loves it. He even plays alone well. I highly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys the Lego series of games. I hope this helps=)

The kids love it! - Aug 01, 2010

This is another great addition to the Lego Wii games. The kids love the games and as an adult suervising their playing time, I am entertained by the subtle references to the books and character back stories. Well worth the purchase. It's important to me that even though younger children may not be playing this game, they will see it and the violence is highly fictionalized so I don't have the same concerns as if they walked in on an older sibling playing Red Steel etc. The older kids have been "forced" to play the Lego series but it's entertaining so we have a good compromise between what I'm willing to allow the littler guys to see and what is fun for the older kids to play. Obviously, I wish I didn't have to keep upgrading my series when new editions come out but this is how video game companies make their money.

Great fun, very entertaining, too bad it came with glitches - Jul 30, 2010

I have been a fan of all of the Lego for wii games. As a Harry Potter enthusiest I was especially excited for this product to come out. The detail is wonderful and knowing what happens in the books helps to overcome some of the puzzles. The humor is great like throwing a doggie toy to the 3 headed dog to distract him. I was at the middle of the third year when a glitch made me start over. I didn't have glitches with any of the other games. My suggestion is not to stop in the middle of story if you can. I turned the game off in the middle of Hagrid introducing Buckbeak and couldn't get back to it. Then I was blocked from continuing by a troll in front of a door. I still love this game and didn't mind starting over. It was definitely worth the price.

Bought it for my son - Jul 29, 2010

I bought this for my 9 year old son. He seems to like it. The price was good, and shipping was timely.

     In a word, disappointing - Jul 26, 2010

I have been playing the Lego series for quite some time, Star Wars Complete saga, Indiana Jones and Batman. The series improved a lot from the first title to the last one so I was expecting a lot from Lego Harry Potter, the game have a great magical world and a lot of characters to play with, but at the end the game left me with a bad taste.

It's extremely easy to achieve puzzles and to advance in it, my 14 year old daughter is completely frustrated because she's a great fan of the books and the movies. The developers took some liberties to recreate some of the best moments of the story, and there are some good moments but in general the game does not take advantage of the magic world.

I really wanted more from the game but I'm considering selling it when I finish, something that never happened with the previous Lego games
