Walk it Out! provides gamers on the Wii platform with a unique way to explore an inviting and entertaining gameworld, while staying active and social. Containing both local single player and multiplayer options, and supporting the DanceDanceRevolution (DDR) controller for Wii, the Wii Remote/Nunchuk configuration or Wii Balance Board, players walk to the rhythm of an in-game soundtrack, as well as take on a series of mini-games. With continued success the gameworld expands with new physical elements, as well as additional songs by popular artists which together keep the fun coming and players moving as they discover new challenges with each step they take. Walk your way to fun and fitness using your controller of choice. View larger. | Two-player local support. View larger. | AI companion stat and calorie tracking. View larger. | Your choice of three mini-games. View larger. | Gameplay Walk It Out! is a unique blend of simulation, action, rhythm and exercise gameplay. The game's main campaign, known as Stepping Mode, exists in an area known as "Rhythm Island", can be played in single player or local two-player simultaneous and challenges players to explore a gameworld that grows with every literal step taken through it. These steps are patterned after the rhythm of the songs of the in-game soundtrack, which are tapped/stepped out using the game controllers supported. These include the Wii Remote/Nunchuk, the Wii Balance Board and the DDR controller for Wii. Tracks are of various speed and tempo, which the player can alter through difficulty settings. The game features a moving indicator line, known as the "Stepping Guide" that helps players keep in tune with the beat, and the displaying of lyrics, which for some can be helpful in keeping in time, can also be suspended as the player chooses. As players walk in synch they are rewarded with in-game chips, depending on their level of accuracy. These chips can in turn be used to unlock "Event Capsules", which hold a variety of elements ranging from new songs, new paths through the gameworld and physical environmental features like zodiac constellations and rainbows. The unlocking/purchasing of events can happen as the user pauses the action to do so, or can be cued to happen as the required chips are collected. Additional features include: character customization and Mii support, your choice of a male or female AI companion, in-game song set lists, map functionality and varied camera controls for improved Event Capsule searching. Mini-Games Along with moving through the main campaign found within the Walk It Out! Stepping Mode, players also have the option to take a break and play a range of entertaining mini-games, some of which involve walking and some not. These include: Whack-A-Slack! A take off on the iconic game Whack-A-Mole, here players try to hit as many of the "Slackie" creatures as possible with an in-game mallet, within the parameters chosen for the game. Multiple difficulty settings are available and play is possible during a single run-through of an unlocked song or set list, or by letting the song(s) loop and play as long as you like. Psycolo Psycolo is a puzzle game in which you use your ability to walk to the beat to move a cube around a gameboard collecting hearts and avoiding Slackies, all while maintaining your on-screen health through accuracy in play. The game features 3 ways to move your cube. Smash ‘n Run! Another nod to Whack-A-Mole, Smash ‘n Run! again has players looking to drop the hammer on Slackies. The difference here is that players need the right size hammer, if not Slackies can fight back and drain your life. This game also incorporates the Wii Remote/Nunchuk controller configuration with your choice of DDR mat or Wii Balance Board controllers. Game Features - Uniquely Motivational Gameplay - Stay active and explore an in-game world where the more you move, the richer your gameworld becomes. Unlockable areas and music tracks tied to the in-game time of day ensure the discovery of new items and goodies every time you play.

Keeps me motivated to walk longer than I've ever wanted to walk before - Aug 26, 2010
There are loads of people who have done the whole island 4 or 5 times... I'm still on my first trip. That being said, I consistently log 3-4 miles a day and have to force myself to stop and participate in real life. Bring on Walk It Out 2!!! There are so many possibilities for this concept - hopefully this is a new wave in exercise games.
excellent - Aug 21, 2010
I have been using this game since February along with several other Wii games. This is by far my favorite. I have started playing it on a mini trampoline to increase the workout intensity. The first game I completed by walking 218 miles. I am now about done with a second game. I wish a WIO 2 would come out as this is a wonderful stress reliever, fun to play and good exercise. Highly recommend it.
Much More Than I Thought It Would Be - Aug 21, 2010
I have to admit that when I saw the case for this game, I was worried. Do not let the "kids" fool you! I'm 40yrs old, and this game kicks my butt every time, and I defintely get a workout. I am completely out of shape so this game is giving me a great workout, without the heart attack. I'm walking futher each day and enjoying it more and more every time. The game is design to use with or without the balance board. I've tried both ways and found that my living room is too small and it made me dizzy, so now, I stick to the board.
The music is great but a bit repetitive. I'm guessing that as I go along, more songs will be added to the playlist.
I highly recommend this game!
Warning about dance mat and "old codger" review - Aug 19, 2010
As someone else charmingly put it, I'm in the AARP generation. I've played this game three times now, and I think it's growing on me. You definitely get distracted enough by clicking on orbs to "build" the island that you don't realize how long you're working out. I'm using a nunchuck and remote, and it seems to be working okay.
However... a warning... I bought a third-party dance mat from an eBay vendor. The game doesn't recognize the mat. I submitted a case with Konami, and they said, "Unfortunately, not all third party mats will function with our games as we only test our games with our official Konami mats." If you want to use a dance mat with this, you'll have to pay the premium for a Konami one.
Excellent! - Aug 17, 2010
I bought this game to help me get started on a diet/exercise program. The music gets tiring but this game really tricks you into exercising. Before I knew it I'd been walking over 3 miles and getting into better shape. An excellent game if you're not comfortable with the gym or if weather conditions outside keep you from walking!
Walk It Out: Low Impact Fun - Aug 12, 2010
I finally finished! /cheer Okay, so above you've got the official product description from Amazon. Here's my version of game play: You start out making your own avatar. You can change very few things about it, clothes color and hair color being the main ones. You never see your avatar's face while you're walking. You can play this with another person or on your own. I played most of it by myself. Your avatar walks around an island to the beat of the music. If you hit the beat correctly, you'll gain a coin. You use the coins to unlock capsules on the island. Most of the capsules are the scenery: cars, buildings, fire hydrants, benches, flower beds, LOTS of trees, windmills, bridges, etc. The size of the object determines how many coins the item costs. You can also use coins to unlock a few other things: different routes to walk, clock times, songs (120 of them in the game), and constellations in the sky. There are also 7 rainbow capsules to click on that don't cost any coins and when you get all the colors of the rainbow, a giant rainbow will appear.
That's the basic game play. Now for a few points:
-Music: Yes, there's a song by Demi Lovato, Jesse McCartney, the Black Eyed Peas, Ne-Yo, Fergie, Missy Elliot, Katy Perry, Soulja Boy, and The Pussycat Dolls. There are also 6 covers of popular songs. Other than those 15 songs, they're all "Konami Originals." These are songs you've never heard (maybe in DDR). Most of them are Japanese or English, but written/sung by Japanese people who don't know English very well, so a lot of the lyrics make no sense. One song in particular is all in Japanese (so I've no idea what they're saying), except when they shout out "Jack Russell Terrier!" Umm, yeah. Despite that, most of the songs aren't too bad to walk through. Some of them seemed too slow to me, but you can switch those songs off in the control menu.
-Capsule Availability: I'm a very organized person. I like to go about things in the most efficient manner. However, I also fail to read the instructions a lot of times, especially when a game seems so incredibly straight-forward as this one. So, I missed the fact that the availability of capsules changed depending on the time of day. Going through the game, I thought that more capsules were becoming available as I unlocked a bigger quantity of the scenery capsules. I didn't realize until I'd unlocked all of those that there were different based on time of day. However, it didn't take too long to finish it up and get the ones I'd missed because I never changed the clock and I don't walk at 2am. If I'd known that all along, I would have been finished last week! Also, the rainbow capsules change too.
-Controller: You can use the DDR mat (our DDR is for the xBox, so we couldn't), the Wii Fit Board, or the controller with the numchuck attachment. With the later, you put the numchuck in your pocket. I found this didn't work well at all. When my 6yo was playing, the numchuck wouldn't fit in her pocket. We found that wearing pants with a belt loop and winding the cord around the loop several times worked better. However, the Wii Board worked the best for me. It says you're not supposed to actually pick your feet up when you're walking on it, but I think they just don't want you to fall off. I had no problem with using it and actually walking.
I enjoyed the game. There's not a lot to it, but for the organized, lover of spreadsheets type of person that I am, it was perfect. I've always been a completist, so I had to finish this! I only found a few things I considered to be real flaws:
-Today when I was finishing up all the capsules, I had 6/7 rainbow pieces. I went through the entire clock trying to find that last piece. It wasn't there. Probably just a glitch because I've finished the rainbow a few times before, but it was annoying on my last go at it.
-If you have to pause for an extended amount of time and the Wii board goes off, when you turn it back on, you'll get the warning every 5-10 steps not to pick up your feet from the board. Usually you only get this once in the beginning. I don't like to waste coins, so this was especially irritating once I'd unlocked entire sections. I had to walk a while to get somewhere that I could spend my coins, log out, and log back on to fix the board.
So, done with Walk It Out. I've got EA Sports Active coming in the mail. I hope I love it as much as this one!
Worth it. - Aug 09, 2010
My mother had this and I was borrowing it so often I figured I needed to get my own copy. I love doing it along or with a partner. Sometimes a group of us will get together and just hand off the remote as we get tired so it's kind of like a relay. I try to do 10,000 steps a day and I've been doing it all summer and still only have a little over 1/2 of the items unlocked/built. Definitely has been a worthwhile purchase for me.
Great fun while walking to good music! - Aug 07, 2010
I was worried when I purchased the game that it would be boring or that I wouldn't like it. Well, I love it! It really is like having your own walking partner that keeps you motivated to go on. The music really gets you moving...
Walk it out! - Jul 31, 2010
If you're a mom and looking for something fun to play with the kids, this is the game for you! It's a video game, yet you don't sit on your' butt the entire time. It keeps the kids active.
You have to have a beat if you're going to walk along to the music. If you even get a little bit off you'll stop collecting those points. Another thing is it's hard to click on things to buy with the Wii remote while walking and keeping a beat. That's tricky. Other than that, it's fun, it's got music, and you can design your charcter with funky colored hair and clothes. :)
Sadly disappointed - Jul 29, 2010
For months I have followed the reviews and discussions here about this game. I just knew that this was a game that I had to get. I finally was able to purchase it today and I was so excited about it. How quickly that changed. I am so disappointed...and very frustrated. After playing for a few minutes I changed the settings to where it only registered every other step, and I switched it so that I would not lose a chip for missing a step. That helped since my character on the screen takes three or four steps, stops, stands there for several seconds, takes a few more steps, stops, etc., etc., all while I am continually walking away in real life. Before I changed the settings I was constantly losing all of my chips. This, on top of the fact that it is extremely hard to click on the capsules while you are moving or to know exactly what you are doing, makes it so frustrating. I walked past colored bubbles, clock faces, and CD-looking things along with the regular capsules, and had no idea what any of them were for. I clicked on some of them and still don't know what they are for. Nothing is explained to you. The same song keeps playing over and over. What a waste. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a game. That's probably because I had such high hopes for this. Maybe walking in place in front of a TV trying to control an unresponsive character, clicking on capsules that seem to do nothing, all while listening to the same song over and over might be fun for some people. But it's not for me.
Fun, Low Impact Game - Jul 28, 2010
The graphics on this game are gorgeous. The music is okay, but some of the songs are not my favorites; still, I can handle them when I focus on picking up the beat. I love clicking on the capsules and building things. This game is not challenging at all for me; however, I would highly encourage people just starting an exercise program to try it.
Getting me walking - Jul 28, 2010
Since many have written about what it is like, I will just give a personal anecdote. I started walking with this about two weeks ago. I have been walking every day. This is remarkable since I don't like to exercise and this is keeping me interested. I found a Walk it Out! facebook page and the support from the group is great. For those who are having difficulty getting started, go to the facebook page as one friend has given all kinds of great hints and helps on making the game worthwhile. I look forward to a sequel.
In addition, my kids are getting interested and we can walk together. Great for ways to spend quality time with tweeners!
Walk It out - Jul 28, 2010
I was looking for a game I could use to exercise that wouldn't be hard on my knees. I love this game. Having arthritis and fibromyalgia it is hard to exercise. I burned off 581 calories the third day. Time flew by. This game should be on the shelves in every store in the sports section.
This is my all time favorite for exercise. a ten plus.
I hope there is Walk It Out II - Jul 27, 2010
This is the first product that has really helped me to look forward to exercise and kept me going without complaint. I walk with something to look forward to, and sometimes find it hard to stop. It takes a couple of sessions to really catch on, but since time is still flying by, what difference does that make? Learning is fun. I think this product is great. My only concern is what happens when I have completed my island???? I just have to hope that there will be a second game.
walk it out - Jul 25, 2010
we're adults and enjoying this game. learning to unlock new things and walk at same time gives exercise and fun. passes time walking. still figuring out game and how not to make music repeat so quickly.
Why Walk it Out is more fun than Wii Fit - Jul 21, 2010
I just got done playing Walk it Out. An Exercise Game for the Wii. I own other Exercise games, including the wildly popular and expensive Wii Fit. I really love Walk it Out! It has to be the most fun I've ever had exercising in my entire life! I hate exercise so much. While other people say exercise makes them feel better after they finish... makes them feel motivated, happy, energetic, etc... for me it does not. My best friend and several of my friends online swear that after you get into exercising every day your body starts to look forward to it. But I say that's a myth. My body rejects and hates exercise really. Even when I was going to the gym before 4 days a week, I had to force myself to go, and it took every ounce of mental power I had to do it.
So I got wii fit, thinking, ok I might actually want to do this. - It sorta worked for awhile... But you see... I get very bored with things very quickly. So I quickly went from every day on wii fit, to every 2-3 days, to once a week, to every other week, to going 2-3 months without using it. I've been trying to ease back into it 2-3 times a week now that I've committed to wanting to lose weight. But it still just wasnt very fun.
I ordered Walk it Out yesterday, thinking I would do it and wii fit, kinda mix it up day to day, to make it less boring. I wasn't sure what to think. The box art, is very poorly designed, targeting the game to 7-10 year olds. The opening video also seems to tell me, this game is not for a 29 year old woman pursuing her master's degree...
However... from the moment the actual game play started... I was hooked. I typically get tired after 30-35 minutes on wiifit. I went for 48 minutes on Walk it Out (it doesnt count time, but I had made a phone call right before I started, so I checked my phone to see that the call was made 48 minutes ago.) In this short time, I burnt 147 calories. But most of all I had FUN doing it. Unlike reviews I had read of the game, I actually had no trouble at all adjusting to the heel tapping method, keeping my toes on the wii balance board. It felt more like bopping around, dancing, kinda, just seemed to be natural to me, and fit the tempo and music. I took to it like a duck taking to water, And what's more amazing is, I normally do not dance. I have NO rhythm. Last time I tried, (I was forcibly dragged to the dance floor by a waitress on a cruise ship) After making a fool of myself, I was told (by the same waitress, who was a complete stranger) "there's classes for this sort of thing honey". So I would say Walk it Out's learning curve is really low. I think it's a game anyone can just pick up and do right out of the box from day one. I didn't even read the manual.
By the 5th or 6th song, I was singing along. It has a great mix of songs that cross many generations. For example in the short time I played I walked in step to Boom Boom Pow from this year, Vacation from the 80s, and crazy DDR type of beats mixed in between. And I don't have many, if any of the songs unlocked. It has over 200 songs.
I just was bopping around the island, hitting power ups, and watching as the island began to grow before my eyes. I had no trouble hitting the beat. A small bar appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen and in DDR fashion, matches up with "tick marks" for each step. So you can watch the bar up top if you are rhythmically challenged like me lol. But after the first few steps, I found myself relying less and less on the bar. I kept the penalty for the missed steps turned on. I want the game to last me as long as possible, so making it as hard as possible will keep it so it takes me longer to unlock more goodies. I had no trouble though even with the penalty turned on. I really enjoy this game, and hope there will be sequels.
Great product - Jul 21, 2010
This is one the best games. I find myself walking 3 miles without realizing it. While you are walking you are looking for different items to help your island grow, so time just slips by.
Maybe not for the very fit-but a great game for the rest of us- if you can walk, you can work out! - Jul 15, 2010
I love this game. I have played it this summer and I couldn't stop until I finished it. I wish they would come out with another one soon. If you are a fitness buff or in excellent shape, this is probably not your game, (unless you need something to do while you recover from an injury and all you can do is walk. :o) If you are a person who is afraid of exercise games, is no longer a teenager, looking for something that everyone in the family can do, or might be just a little bit overweight and uncoordinated (like me), I would give this one a try. You can walk miles before you realize it, because you are having so much fun. You earn points by walking to unlock items and songs to build an island. The map in the pause menu will tell you where the goodies are each hour you are walking. By the very end of the game I was walking with a printed map from the Konami website in my hand and marking events I wanted to complete. (The events vary by the time of day) This game has a Facebook page, and you don't need to be a member on Facebook to read the comments and the information from the people who love this game. This site also has great tips and hints. Some of the biggest fans of this game had never consistently exercised before they purchased this game and were the proud owners of treadmills, workout DVDs, gym memberships and many other unused fitness items, but they had completed this game (which takes at least a couple of months for most people)and were starting over. If any of this sounds like you, give this game a try!
walk it out - Jul 15, 2010
this 'walking' game works for me because the time goes by before I notice and I've done some exercise without getting bored. It's keeping me going which is exactly what I need at sixty two! I have to say the music is not for me though. In fact some of it is pretty awful!Walk It Out
Not for adults, maybe a family with younglings. - Jul 12, 2010
I bought this game in the hopes that it would allow my mother to get some exercise. I tried it out once before I was going to introduce it to her, and ended up returning it. It's a kids game, through-and-through.
Walk - Jul 08, 2010
I get a greater workout with this product than I do walking in the park. I can walk everyday, now, inspite of the weather.
I thought this was going to be a kid's game that burned few calories. I was so wrong! - Jul 06, 2010
Although I work out daily, after doing this "game", it was one of the few times I didn't want to stop and couldn't wait to do it again the next day.
Although I typically buy most Wii fitness games before they come out just because I love the variation and there aren't many out yet, I fgured this one looked marketed to kids so I probably would have fun but not burn many calories...so it took me months to decide to buy it.
Wrong!
First, it was fun...it was really fun...it's one of the few times time flies when I work out and I keep going long after the time I expected. I sometimes "jog" it out and get an amazing workout because I am having so much fun playing that I forget I am working out. I can also do odd things like fold laundry while I march as long as I keep the beat to get points while I do it for a minute during my workout! I love the songs! That is one thing I hate about fitness DVDs...usually instrumental electronica. This had true hit tunes and you can learn the lyrics as you go if you want to as well, because they are on the screen. (actually that distracts me in a good way too...the more you do while you workout, the more you forget you are tired!) There are 120 songs so you are sure to find some good choices...all in a great beat to motivate moves. You also unlock songs with your points you earn in your walking.
Because you have to keep up to get points to "build" things and open pathways around the island, you do keep up and you think about the game rather than "no pain no gain!" I actually feel like I am playing a game more than working out. Countless times I kept going because of this very thing. For example, I had planned to work out for 30 minutes last night but an hour later I was still enjoying myself...I was about to unlock a pathway to a park and by golly I wasn't going to stop until I had the extra points to do so, then I decided I wanted the points to get that car...! When I play during the day, I am in a day scene on the island. At night, it's been night out and the points I get when walking to the beat help me build street lights, star galaxies, etc. Day or night, if you find all of the colored rainbow discs hidden about the island on your walk to click on when you pass them, a rainbow appears on the island. It's okay if you pass them up and don't click, you can either walk back around to the same spot, or just click on your mii and turn them around to go back to get it.
The whole point is that you have to use your legs to get points by stepping to the beat, with those points you use your hands to try to click on discs that unlock things to help you build this island. The first time you walk it, it's a barren island with a few paths. The more you do, the more things appear...apartments, rainbows, bushes, palm trees, new paths, park benches, parks, more miis, cars, houses, shops, mailboxes, street signs to help you get around, etc etc and you unlock more songs too. Plus, I really like the scenery when I take these walks that change every day on a great island! You want to keep going and keep building so the next time you come back and walk, you have a better island that you build. In fact, you are reminded how excited the islanders are that you are building so much for them! funny. While I can go outside to walk, in Texas that means it can be over 100 degrees, it may be rainy, it could be dark outside, it could even be winter...on the island I can cut a path to the ocean and hear it as I walk across the sand, I can walk by cute shops and parks...all at 73 degrees while I sweat it out comfortably and safely but with more visual interest!
Suddenly walking inside is MORE fun! And you don't have to stay in one spot. You can literally walk around the room keeping to the beat if you want. I even do side steps and dance steps to the beat just to mix up my moves.
Although I have a Wii dance mat which you can use, I prefer to use no mat. That way I can put my running shoes on and really work up a sweat if I want to. It's better on your feet and you aren't supposed to use shoes on the dance mat. I wouldn't want to use a balance board on this...you can't pick up your feet on that so you burn few calories in those games, but you can use it if you desire, it allows you to...but let me get to that...
Calories burned:
I wear a bodybugg to measure my daily caloric burn...this also allows me to measure the exact number of calories I burn in any workout and compare it to others. I mention this only so you know what I say is based upon scientific measurement rather than perceived exertion. This game burned as many calories as my fitness DVDs! and I have a HUGE library of fitness DVDs...yet this was FUN! And some times I even stood still trying to click on something or figure something out...yet when I was trying to earn "chips" I'd really get going and my heart loved me for it! It should be noted that my own measured calorie burn was almost 100 calories MORE than what the game said I burned. Of course, they are giving you an average of someone your age and weight so any game is just a guess, but know that what they say is conservative rather than overestimating like some games are known to do to make you "like" it.
Note: If you have the AE Sports active, it comes with a holder that goes on your leg that you can put a nunchuck in. I wear workout shorts with no pockets and don't want to hold the nunchuck so I put it in there when I do this game and it works great to read my walk. I've actually, oddly, found it's best placement to be with the nunchuck on the back of my thigh just above my knee. Maybe it is a coincidence that it seems to work perfectly when I wear the nunchuck pocket on the back, but it's comfortable and it works so I do it each time.
It will keep track of you setting records, how much of the island you have unlocked, how many steps you have taken, etc to try to motivate you to beat your goals.
UPDATE: We have now declared this the most addictive way of burning calories ever. First Wii game we fight for time to do...and this household has doubled our time we spend walking/working out. Suddenly I "get" to do it rather that "have" to do it as I've always felt burning calories was in the past. We literally think we'll spend a quick 15 minutes walkkng and 2 hours later, we are still into it because we "built" a luxury home, a lighthouse, a hotel...and can't stop. It's crazy. This is absolutely hands down the most addictive Wii game I have. I have 4 new Wii games and workout DVDs I've never used gathering dust right now because I spend my time doing this. However, because of this, my muscle tone in my arms was suffering so I found that if I walk and somedays use the nunchuck and controller in my hands, I don't feel guilty and double my calorie burn by using arms and legs. Win/win.
frustration: it doesn't always read ALL my steps unless I do have it in my hands...not a huge frustration but I hope they fix it on the next version. Also their marketing needs to change from kiddy marketing. No adult I know who bought this isn't addicted. I googled today to find any info on a second version. We are already hating the day we get this whole island built and have to go back to regular walking. Fortunately, we still have tons of things to build...hopefully 2nd version is in the works.
Florida Summer Walking - Jul 05, 2010
Living in Florida year round, it isn't always easy to get out and walk. We have
high humidity and/or thunderstorms, so this is a great way to make sure you
get your daily walk. Great variety of music as you walk. Interactive scenery.
It is fun and healthy.
When exercise is not exercise - Jun 29, 2010
I think Walk it Out is a brilliant program! You are so involved with stepping in time and clicking on things that you truly forget you are exercising! And, as I really do not enjoy exercising, this is ideal!
I would recommend collecting the music as soon as you can as you will get tired of hearing the same songs over and over and you will welcome the new ones.
Great program!
Best Wii exercise game! - Jun 28, 2010
We love this game and we've had it for over two months now. If you bump up the intensity (workout with weights, raise your knees, double time, etc.) you can get a good work out. And it's fun to go through seeing what each capsule contains. This has been the only Wii exercise type game that we have actually continued with. We also have My Fitness Coach and Wii Fit Plus. We use the controller plus nunchuck and it works great. Just slip the nunchuck in your pants pocket and hold the controller.
