The fourth generation of hardware released for the PlayStation 3 entertainment platform, the PlayStation 3 120GB system is the next stage in the evolution of Sony's console gaming powerhouse. Loaded with a mix of multimedia features and functions available on earlier PlayStation 3 models, as well as a series of new advancements and refinements, the PlayStation 3 120GB system is destined to push the envelope in the realm of Next-Generation entertainment. What's Under the Hood As with previous models, the PlayStation 3 120GB system features an IBM "Cell" processor and a co-developed NVIDIA graphics processor that together allow the system to perform two trillion calculations per second. Yet the 120GB system manages to improve on this with its 45nm version of the processor, which although running at the same 60+nm speed as previous PS3 versions, uses less energy. This makes the unit's smaller size and quieter fan possible. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, the 120GB system also boasts an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TVs and projectors. (The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience) This console also provides for an extreme sound experience by supporting Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, as well as Linear PCM 7.1. Finally, it features cross connectivity with your PC network and PlayStation Portable (PSP) and its pre-installed, 120GB hard disc drive allows you to save games as well as download content from The Internet. Unlike The some other models of The PlayStation 3, The 120GB system does not offer backwards compatibility. The same functionality now in a smaller, more quiet and energy efficient package View larger. | Space saving when placed upright... View larger. | As well as when horizontal View larger. | A textured, no fingerprint finish View larger. | Blu-ray, PlayStation Network Downloads and Beyond PlayStation 3 utilizes The Blu-ray disc media format, which gives you The best high-definition viewing experience on your television, by way of The format's ability to hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This tremendous capacity, combined with The awesome power of The system's processor and graphics card, promises an endless stream of mind-blowing games, and other multimedia content. This doesn't mean though that The PS3 is limited to Blu-ray discs. It also supports CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. In addition, PlayStation 3 system software includes BD Live support that allows you to play discs that support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE), meaning you can also connect to The Internet while playing discs that support this format to obtain additional features. And of course PS3 owners also receive free access to The PlayStation Network (PSN), where through The PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home, they can download games, game demos, movies, and other content, as well as chat with friends, play mini-games, compete in tournaments and explore dedicated game spaces. Sensational Controller The Dualshock 3 wireless controller included with The PlayStation 3 120GB system provides The most intuitive game play experience, with pressure sensors in each action button and The inclusion of The highly sensitive Sixaxis motion sensing technology. Each hit, crash and explosion is more realistic when The user feels The rumble right in The palm of their hand. It can even detect natural movements for real-time and high precision interactive play, acting as a natural extension of The user’s body. Dualshock 3 utilizes Bluetooth technology for wireless game play and The controller’s detachable USB cable to seamlessly and automatically charge The controller when connected to The PlayStation 3. By integrating all of these features into The popular PlayStation controller design, The Dualshock 3 further enhances The advanced gameplay experience only available on The PlayStation 3 system. Synch with Your Other Sony HDMI Devices The PlayStation 3 120GB system features HDMI + Bravia Synch functionality. Bravia Synch allows connectivity between Sony HDMI products, without having to utilize multiple remote controls. I love my PlayStation 3 - Aug 27, 2010
I love my Playstation 3. Sony did a wonderful job in creating this console.
Most of my friends bought Xbox 360 mostly because it was the cheaper of the two.
As time progressed their consoles got the infamous Red Ring of Death while my PS3 still runs.
Although it is the most expensive out of the consoles, it is well worth it. The PS3 is a media monster in your room. You could:
-Play video games,
-Play Blu-Rays,
-Stream music or videos from an external hard drive,
-Watch Netflix
-Browse the internet
-Browse the PS Network and buy vintage games such as Mortal Kombat.
-Play multiplayer online for free!
If you are not sure if you should get an Xbox or a PS3, do not hesitate to get the PS3. You will not be disappointed.
We used to have the PlayStation 2 which was also cool, but the newer features of PS3 can't be beat since my husband loves games and I love the blu-rays. Good for both of us!
Buy this console - Aug 27, 2010
This is truly a nex gen console, hardcore gamers oriented but so much more, internet conected, its a entertaiment system on its own and by a 1080p tv if you can as big as posible.
And also buy games with some research before.
GET IT! - Aug 26, 2010
BD Player, Cell Processor, user upgradable HD, loads of online content, and even more game titles. I got the 120GB version before the new fall 2010 packages were released, but swapped my 120 for a 500gb. Forget overheating scares and noise levels. Once your PS3 is in a clean cool environment it will work as it should.
The only warning i have about this product, is that it has now encouraged me to get rid of my 20" CRT tv (which i refuse to play the ps3 on) and go shopping for a 1080p HD Flat Panel tv :) Looks like my social life is gonna go downhill from here. PlayStation is where you want to be. You wont be disappointed. Get IT!
PS3 - Aug 25, 2010
Bought this after my 60 gig launch PS3 died. I like how quiet it is compared to my 60 gig. it is also a lot smaller. Not quite as many features though. overall still pretty sweet.
Best Christmas present in years - Aug 24, 2010
I got this for Christmas 2009 from my wife and I have to say I am totally in love with it. I hadn't been playing console games for quite some time although I had been an avid gamer in my youth. This console totally brought back the fun in gaming for me.
It's easy to set up, looks phenomenal on my HDTV using an HDMI cable, and best of all, free on-line gameplay! I love the fact that I can play this console with my friends living in Europe. The wifi is easy to configure and I haven't had any problems with it so far.
Playstation Online is a great feature, having a store on your console to download new games and demos, and even find classic PSOne games is just amazing to me.
All in all, this is the best console I have ever owned, and apart from the Xbox, I've owned them all.
Love it! - Aug 21, 2010
The PS3 came really fast during the time where they extremely hard to find. We love the built in wireless, graphics, game play, netflix, etc.
Love my PS3 - Aug 20, 2010
I haven't actually used this thing to play games. I game on my XBox 360, but I own this thing purely for the Blu-Ray player which is absolutely amazing!
Totally worth it!
ps3 blu-ray not working! - Aug 19, 2010
I have purchased my ps3 from amazon a week ago and received it today.
the unit doesn't recognize any blu-ray disc. I tried a blu-ray game and two movies. when I insert the disc it does nothing but after a few seconds makes a sound (it sounds like it is repositioning the disc) but still nothing happens. it reads regular dvds though. is there any option I should turn on in order to use the blu-rays or is the unit defective? any advice before I return it?
thank you...
PS3 Slim (Like the fat one, but quiet) - Aug 10, 2010
I was hesitant to upgrade to a new PS3 that loses backwards compatibility, but my old PS3 fat finally died on me for the 4th time; but this time my warranty had expired. So I finally bit the bullet and upgraded.
The first thing I noticed about the PS3 slim is it's extremely light by comparison to the old model, and much smaller. While I'm more partial to the glossy black than this matte version, the system isn't on display in normal use anyway. Actually, my old PS3 ran so hot that the fan constantly ran at full power which sounds like a plane engine revving up for takeoff. This new system is so quiet when I was lost in the cord jungle behind my TV to hook it up, I had to crawl out to make sure the thing was even on. I've had my PS3 slim for a while now and haven't had a single issue with it. So while it sucks losing backwards compatibility, its really nice to be able to actually use the system rather than keep it in storage at Sony's repair center. So if you're contemplating buying a PS3 but are on the fence about which to get, hopefully this helps some.
Great system! - Aug 10, 2010
I love this so much. When i bought it i didnt think it would be this cool. it's also great for playing cd's dvd's and blu-ray too! I would highly reccommend this rather than an xbox.
Best gaming system ever (I have 2) - Aug 09, 2010
purchase one for me then another for the wife. Hours of enjoyment playing games with each other, against each other, and with friends. Best part is online play is free, unlike the Xbox membership crap. It has built in wifi, blue ray player, HD, etc., etc., miles above the rest. Would purchase again and again.
All around the best game console available - Aug 08, 2010
The Sony 120GB Playstation 3 pioneered a new line of the slim model for this product. The transition to the slim model was made necessary due to imperfections in the old model which led to overheating issues. The slim improves on the design to reduce those issues. A smaller, quieter, and more efficient system with a bigger hard drive is very impressive. It has lost a few features along the way. The 120GB slim has 2 USB ports and the card reader slots have been removed. Also there is no backwards compatibility.
Being a previous owner of the 60GB, I will be the first to admit that although the 4 USB ports and card readers and backwards compatibility were a nice luxury, the line-up of next generation games available have reduced my urge to play PS2 games down to nearly nothing, and I didn't find myself using the card reading capabilities that often either.
There is one noticeable annoyance with the new 120GB slim PS3. Upon starting the system and turning it off, sometimes I hear a cracking sound which concerned me at first, but I believe it is caused by a temperature change which causes the body to either expand or contract. It's worrisome only due to the fact that the older models had heating issues and this model is supposed to be an improvement on that.
Overall, this is hands down the best system with its unrivaled versatility and free online gaming. The system can be turned into the central piece in a home entertainment system.
Great buy! - Aug 08, 2010
Forget how great this item is in regards to a gaming console, it's worth the price just for its built in Blue ray player. Sony will release a firmware update soon to allow the Blu Ray player to support 3d as well!
great blu ray player - Aug 07, 2010
great blu ray player but personally i don't use it for gaming but its all about the games you like .. if it has the games you like then you will like it.
CECH-2101a verified - Aug 07, 2010
just to add to all of the other wonderful reviews on the PS3, that this is the most energy efficient PS3 on the market today (08/07/10). Peace, out.
The Best Console hands down - Aug 05, 2010
PS3 is the best console hands down. I purchased a 120gb PS3 slim this last christmas and have been very happy with it.
Blu ray, the best games/exclusives, the best controller, free online play I can just go on and on about this awesome devise all day.
I have become a fanboy and for a good reason. PS3 only does everything! With Move it's going to take it to another level, far superior to the Kinect and Wii upset me because now I have to pay an additional $40.00 for my two controllers to accurately move. I'd rather take that $40.00 and put it torward a PS3 Move starter bundle.
So Far no RLOD!!! (Red light of death) - Aug 05, 2010
So Sony removed the PS2 drive in order to prevent the horrifying red light of death issues. Bravo. This is my 3rd PS3 (first two had RLOD and were sent back to Sony for replacements).
So far I have played quite a bit and no red light of death!
My issue though is that the menu is screwy and when you boot up, the DVD/ Blu-Ray autoplay doesn't seem to work. Instead they take you to the window showing the Playstation store in hopes that you will buy some crappy overpriced games.
Other than that I dig it. Running an HDMI to Toshiba Regza 46" LCD 1080p and it looks great. Sound through Digital Optical to Yamaha surround sound and sounds great. No beefs with the games either. Good selection.
Outstanding! - Aug 05, 2010
I've been a moderate gamer since NES, and have been part of the evolution of the gaming, going through NES, SNES, then I moved to Playstation 1, 2 and now PS3. Let me tell you, this is the best console I have ever had, the graphics are superior and the wireles controllers are incredible. Have played few titles and have yet to try others. So far I have tried FIFA 2009 and 2010, FIFA Street 2009, Modern Warfare, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories; all of the games are incredible, so far I have not had any trouble with the system or games. The HDMI interface helps a lot when you plug it into your hometheater system. Picture quality is really nice when watching DVD's or BluRay discs.
The best console on the market! - Aug 02, 2010
I have actually owned my Playstation 3 for several years and I don't own this newer "Slim" version, but I have had plenty of time with the console and I would like to share my thoughts.
Several years ago I wrote a very positive review of the Xbox 360 and while I still think it is a decent console I have come to prefer the PS3 for several reasons.
First is the fact that the Playstion 3 (I'll call it PS3 from here on out) has been a much more reliable console for me. My Xbox 360 has died 2 times on me and while to their credit Microsoft fixed it for free both times I am still left with this feeling that my 360 may die on me at any time. My PS3 on the other hand has been rock solid.
The PS3 is also a much more feature-rich console. My PS3 plays three generations of games--PS1, PS2 and PS3--and two generations of movie formats--DVD and Blu-ray. The Blu-ray playback feature alone is worth around $150 to $200, since that is the amount it would cost you to get a similarly performing stand-alone Blu-ray player. On top of this it also has built-in wi-fi, the highest quality HDMI 1.3 output, and a web browser that allows you to surf the net between gaming sessions.
Another aspect of the PS3 that I really appreciate is the fact that it uses standard components for many things such as the hard drive and the USB cables that charge the controllers. If you want a larger hard drive you simply have to buy an affordable standard 2.5" SATA hard drive. If you need a longer cable for your controller you can buy a regular USB cable for a couple of dollars. The PS3 also uses standard Bluetooth keyboards and microphones. I was even able to use an older USB headset to play online.
This is in stark contrast to Microsoft's approach with the 360. Nearly every peripheral the 360 uses is a proprietary format, from the hard drive to the controller cables. On my 360 I still only have a 20GB hard drive because I bought it at launch and the 120GB proprietary hard drives that are available as an upgrade are too expensive. My cable for my controller has also been shorting out and losing connection, so I have to buy the proprietary cable that costs $20.
Now when it comes to each console's respective online gaming service some people have claimed that the 360's Xbox LIVE service is superior. However, after using both services for many hundreds of hours I believe the 360's service is very slightly better, but not $50-a-year better. In fact, the Playstation 3's online service has nearly all of the 360 service's offerings (and a few that the 360 lacks) , but is completely free. With my PS3 I can go online, play my games with friends, meet new friends, and download games, demos and movies. The PS3 even has netflix streaming.
The only real advantage Xbox LIVE has over the PSN is that you can chat with friends that are playing a different game than you. But to be honest I have rarely used this feature and when I did use it the poor quality was pretty annoying, not to mention that it makes it hard to focus on the game you are playing. The other thing that should be mentioned is that most of the big games on the PS3 have their own servers and seem to run a little better (less lag and disconnections) than the P2P networking 360 games generally use.
A couple other nice things I enjoy about the PS3 is that the items in the PSN store are priced in dollars instead of the stupid Microsoft points system used in the 360's "marketplace". On the 360 you have to buy points in set increments, so you always end up with unused points that you have to wait to use on your next purchase. You also always have to do a calculation to figure out how much a certain item in the marketplace is going to actually cost you in dollars. The PS3's approach is easier and much more straight forward.
The other thing I like is that on the PS3 you can use custom-made themes or even make your own, instead of having to buy them as is the case on the 360. There are literally hundreds or thousands of custom-made themes you can get on the internet free of cost. This means that you have a much greater chance of finding themes you really love, and it also saves you a lot of money. I should mention, however, that there are some great themes available in both consoles' stores that may be worth your money. It's just nice that on the PS3 you have the option to make your own themes or get other user-created themes for free.
The last thing I want to talk about, and by far the most important, are the games. The PS3 has simply been superb in this regard. The breadth and quality of the PS3 exclusives are unmatched in my opinion. The Xbox 360 has a few exclusives I really like, such as the Gears of War and Halo series, but over time it became obvious that the 360's exclusive offerings couldn't keep up with the PS3's output.
The problem stems from the fact that Microsoft has very few 1st party studios to create exclusive games for the 360. They even let go of Bungie (of Halo fame) who is now an independent developer. Now they are only left with Rare (whose output this generation hasn't exactly been great), Lionhead (who make the Fable series), and 343 Industries who haven't made a game, but are supposed to make any future Halo games now that Bungie is done with the series.
Sony on the other hand have somewhere around 23 studios under their umbrella making games exclusively for Playstation consoles. The result has been some of the best games of the generation, including gems such as Uncharted 2, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, and God of War 3.
Looking forward to the future there seems to be about 3 or 4 times as many exclusives I want on the PS3 as on the 360. I'm looking forward to Halo Reach and Gears of War 3 on the 360, but other than that I don't see anything I want. On the PS3 I am looking forward to Little Big Planet 2, Gran Turismo 5, inFamous 2, Killzone 3, Twisted Metal, The Last Guardian and Uncharted 3. This has basically been the story for awhile now.
The 360 is a good console, I just wish Microsoft had worked harder to ensure a reliable console and to invest in some 1st party studios to bring us more unique gaming experiences we can't get on any other console.
As of right now though the PS3 offers the most reliability, the most features, an amazing free online service, and the most high quality and diverse lineup of exclusives.
Not what I anticipated - Aug 02, 2010
I have been a Sony fan for quite some time. Pretty much ever since the original Play Station came out. However, I have waited and waited for the right price on a Sony system and I am disappointed. I won't bash it, nor will I exclaim another system. All I can tell you is what I am experiencing. I have owned the original like I said, I also owned a couple of PS2's, and had an Xbox given to me which I only played halo on it though. Here is what I do and don't like.
A. Graphics. Nice, expecially with my new TV (Specs below) and using an HDMI cable. However, seems to me that unless you are an absolute gaming freak, you probably can't really tell the difference between one system and the other at this level (ie XBox VS PS). I know I can't. Could not tell anything different between my PS2 or Xbox either. I just chose PS because that is what I originally started with.
B. Blue ray VS no Blue ray. Seriously, I watched a blue ray and non blue ray movie on the system (HDMI hook-up on a 50" Plasma 600hz 1080p, a No joke good TV) and I really have a hard time saying blue ray is so much greater. My wife and I both had a hard time really telling a big difference at all. So don't get hung up on the blue ray thing either.
C. Games. We have Avatar, Need for Speed Shift, and about 5 other games I bought when I got the system. Problem is, this is the absolute SLOWEST LOADING SYSTEM I have ever had in my life. I spend about 1/3 of my total time on Need for Speed just waiting for it to load my next segment. I do not know which processor Sony used, or how much RAM it has, but whatever it has, it falls WAY SHORT of being enough for you to not have to wait. REDICULOUS.
Overall, I am actually sorry I stayed loyal to Sony for this one. However, please remember I do not have an XBOX 360 either so I can not compare (Except for graphics that I have seen on one I played at a friends house). But all in all, I feel Sony missed the mark a little on this one. I can't justify the extra money for the blueray either.
Good system, but find someone that has one and plays the games you like on it to try it out first. I am sure all games can't be so slow to load, at least I hope not.
PS3 Review - Jul 31, 2010
It is just fine!
Is not expensive anymore and it is a great system cause you can use it like and entertaiment center, but games, are pretty cool but once you beat a game, well it get bored, they are pretty simple in that replay value.... so this is why you can see games get cheaper every day
Time burner - Jul 30, 2010
The only bad aspect of this station is that you'll end spending too much time playing games. How much fun depends on the game you buy... I bought the game I like and I enjoy it. However, I preferred PS3 over XBox only because of Bluray player and I am very happy I made a good decision.
Slim design with quiet operation - Jul 28, 2010
I bought the PS3 the big edition when it came out
Unfortunately i downloaded a Upgrade that busted somenthing in the operation system
reparing it was very expensive so i desided to buy the slim edition
I highly recommend checking out the newly designed PlayStation 3 Slim,
as it offers a 120GB hard drive and a slimmer, lighter design...
And i was so happy that again Amazon ships the product right away...
I highly recommend buying it directly from Amazon, well most of the time i perfer
to buy anything from them...
Thanks again Amazon for your excelent costumer service...
Yay PS3!! - Jul 27, 2010
The first product I'm going to review is the Sony PlayStation 3 120GB Slim. This is the second version of the PS3 that Sony has released. The first version was the fat model which apparently went on a diet and is now about 30% smaller. This makes the slim lighter and easier to manage. Like the PS3 fat, the slim also comes with built in Wi-Fi, a 120GB Hard drive, an HDMI output so that you can play games in 1080p as opposed to the default 480i.
Now I'm going to get into the specifics. The first thing you notice when I turn on my PS3 is its awesome display. This is the 1080p I was telling you about. It's crisp, clear and alluring. Now that we're loaded up, I'm going to show you the in-menu features.
The first thing you'll notice when you see the menu, is all of the different things the PS3 can do. The initial thing you should do once you get your PS3 is set up the display and other settings exactly how you want them. You can change the background colors, the clock placements and other aesthetics like these. You can even download wall papers and themes for your background.
Next, you'll notice that you can upload photos into albums! This is a great way to capture and store all of your good times in one, easily accessible place. Now you can view these photos on a big screen!
Next, you'll see that you can also upload music to your PS3. This is one of my absolute favorite features. I can put all of my favorite albums on my Playstation and have them no matter what situation occurs. Whether it's a party, or if I have a girl over, OR I can even play my music WHILE I play some of my games!
Next is the video feature. You can both download and upload videos to you PS3 and watch them at will. If you have a HDMI cable, you can watch these videos in 1080p as long as the video itself has the HD capability. This is where Sony PS3 blows all other game consoles out of the water. PS3 is the only console that supports blu-ray disk capabilities. So forget buying a Blu-Ray player! Just buy a PS3 and get blu-ray PLUS all of these other great features! Plus, what's so unique about the PS3 blu-ray player is that Sony has constant updates which make everything better including the blu-ray player. No other console or blu-ray player can do that!
Next are the games. You can play all PS3 games, demos and some PS1 classics here. Like I said earlier, on certain games you can play the music you have uploaded in the background as opposed to just listening to the game music.
Next, and probably the most important aspect of the PS3 is the Playstation Network. The PSN is basically Sony's online store where you can do all kinds of cool stuff. You can buy games, download demos, game videos, wallpapers and you can even download extra game content for games you've purchased. What's really cool, to me anyways, is that you can also buy games from the first Playstation system under PS1 classics.
Another exclusive feature of the PS3 is that you can surf the web. The PS3 comes equipped with a web-browser; however it doesn't support websites that use flash. You can still get news, check ESPN, youtube and more.
So you're thinking, "I get all of these features for just $299?!" Yes, you do. However there are a few cons to the PS3. I just mentioned the fact that you cannot view websites that require "Flash." Also, the PS3 is not backwards compatible, which means that you can't play PS2 games on the PS3 Slim, though some of the older "fat" versions do have this capability. Also, the online gameplay isn't as developed as Xbox Live, but it's still quite good. And probably the things I hate about the PS3 are the slow download and install times. The say patience is a virtue and I tell you what, the PS3 will teach you patience!
So overall, I'd give the PS3 a 9/10. I bought mine and I love it. You can find this versatile device lots of places for the around the same price; $299 or higher, but if you come to Wavee you can buy it for $292
More than Expected - Jul 27, 2010
Disregard any negative reviews you may read. They are singular, unique issues that can be solved through customer support.
This PS is exactly what you want when it comes to replacing an old unit. Small, light, cooler (saves energy), huge hard drive, and more. Also comes with a dual shock controller! This has the smaller chipsets you have read about, and the prices are not going down anytime soon. Sony has stated they are finally making a profit on the units, so they are gonna ride that wave as long as they can.
