Middle of the Road - Sep 01, 2010
I'll try to cool off some of the hot heads around here with a more level headed approach in reviewing this game. As we all know the Madden Franchise has been around for many years and with that over the years there has been some improvements towards game play, graphics, AI etc etc. Granted this year hasn't done a lot of new things, If anything it has polished some issues with last years model. The Running game has greatly improved, blockers will actually block and make routes. And finally after these past few years of listening to horrid commentary we get some fresh air from a different guy, It adds a little flavor of excitement to the whole mix on top of your coach yelling advice into your head set...really pulls you into the game.
Now granted I ain't saying this the greatest Madden yet, It ain't perfect. They haven't improved the Franchise mode and Superstar Mode which to me is like the bread and butter of anything related to the NFL. While yes the AI has improved there is some noticeable issues that could be tightened (especially playing Defense).
Fact remains, the next few years EA has a hold of NFL exclusive titles, We can only hope that they listen to us and improve the quality of game play throughout. All in all its still a fun game and should get this title, even if you are apprehensive about it.
Resting on their laurels. Don't give them your money this year. - Sep 01, 2010
Absolutely atrocious. I am one of those folks who buys each and every year, but with this latest incarnation of the series, I think that's all about to change. I'm not going to get into gameplay... It suits me fine, and I enjoy it. Instead, I'm going to tell my professional peers what an abysmal job they've done.
I test software for a living. When I get home, I play video games. I expect those games to have been tested, because bugs REALLY get under my skin. I'm nine games into a franchise and have already counted (and written down, in case anyone wants to know the specifics and how to repro them [really, just play the game]) six glaring flaws. They don't affect the game too greatly, but they're the kind of bugs that should never be in an end product. They're not cases of me trying something goofy... just playing the game in a vanilla fashion.
EA testers, you're really bad at what you do. EA, it's time to pay real testers to do this work and quit relying on fanboys who will burn the midnight oil, work for minimum wage, and "test" your software.
Weak!!! - Aug 31, 2010
I have bought Madden every single year since the Ninendo 64. I have always put up with people saying EA sports doesn't change anything etc etc. Well its true, this years franchise mode is the SAME exact as last year. Not even the menus have changed slightly. The AI this year is TERRIBLE. I have been playing on All Madden mode and have scored about 40+ points a game on average with 5 minute quarters. I played this through 1 season of franchise mode and ended up selling it to someone on Craigslist because I had no interest of playing the game anymore. I remember playing Madden 2009 almost for an entire year, franchise mode and online.
For this year, I feel no reason to get competitive with it online just because the AI and "gameflow" system is annoying - if EA Sports thought the gameflow system would call accurate plays based on the situation it is utter BS. EA sports need to step up their game, I think it is because there is a lack of competition for football games they are just giving us garbage knowing us football fans will buy it.
I'm only buying next years version if they apologize for this years first.
3/5 rating - ONLY because it is the only football NFL fans can buy.
Ugh.... Come On EA... - Aug 31, 2010
Most of the other 1 star reviews covered this mess...
Here are a few more things that just don't work...
- Putting a player on IR still doesn't free up a roster spot... How hard is this to fix EA?
- Fight for the fumble is back! Oh boy! (The only thing that they did right with this is add the option to turn it off)
- Gameflow playing calling.... Why?...
- I've played almost two season's in franchise mode and every signal pre game show is exactly the same...
- I don't know what they call the feature where the coordinator talks to you in the ear piece but I had that on for about a half of 1 game. After I heard the same audio clip for the 4th time from my DC I had to turn it off.
- The wildcat formation just doesn't work. There is some kind of animation that forces your running back to take two steps forward instead of running the sweep. (At least with the Browns playbook) Josh Cribbs gets blasted for a two yard loss everytime I try to run the play. I don't even get a chance to control him.
- Online servers are the slowest thing I've ever seen on Xbox Live. Half the time it feels like I'm playing on dial up.
- I get a delay after I snap the ball about 30% of the time.... When I am playing OFFLINE...
And the list goes on...
The ONLY thing that I personally like better is the new motion control. I really like using the analog sticks to move my runner and using the momentum of the runner to make cuts.
Other than that. EPIC FAIL EA.
Look for my copy to pop up on the used game section here. I wouldn't buy it though.
Nickel and dime you - Aug 30, 2010
I am really disgusted at the way EA is trying to nickel and dime people. It comes with an online code, that once used it cannot be used again. Meaning that the resale value to this game is worthless. I find this ridiculous. Your are already charging $50 + for this game. The game itself is okay, but nothing incredible. I really hope the NFL passes the licensing on to someone else.
Could be better... - Aug 30, 2010
Two steps forward, one step back (like always). Stuff that used to work just fine now sucks (strategy pad, online play (REALLY lags)), but some things that used to suck are now better (they FINALLY tuned the catch animations). All in all alright, but certainly could have been A LOT better.
i like it, but then again, i haven't played madden since the 05 version - Aug 30, 2010
i enjoy the game, i think it is fun to play. i usually play ncaa football, but this year i found madden to be more enjoyable. the locomotion is awesome..i can understand the naysayers though. franchise is a bit bare, and the idea of the cpu picking your plays will go the route of QB cone vision. it will be a one year wonder. thankfully, you can still play the old way. i love the responsiblity of picking my own plays. i also love defense assist~~it allows me to pick any player on D and follow the play. there is a lot of intelligence in this game, so i am giving it four stars.
Worst Madden To Date.... - Aug 29, 2010
The only real difference between this game and the previous game is a roster update, which is hard to justify for $[...]. The controls are hard to use on this version and the gameplay seems a lot worse. Adrian Petersen is prone to fumbles in real life, but in this game, he fumbles 2-3 times every game, which takes away the realism and fun. I'm not going to get into the code to do online play, as that's another raw deal from Electronic Arts... I will say my recommendation would be to buy last year's version and stay far far away from Madden NFL 11.
good but needs work - Aug 28, 2010
Good but needs work. GameFlow sucks. Voice commentary is terrible. Online match making and lobby system is broken. Other wise its solid(new running game system is awesome), but not much of an improvement from last year.
Best Madden to date - Aug 28, 2010
This is the best Madden game that EA has ever made. The gameflow option is great. You can create your own gameplan, or have the coach call in the plays for you. This helps people mix up thier offense and defense, versus just picking the handful of plays they know.
I have no idea why people are rating this game so badly. The running game is so much better. You can actually run the ball effectively. Defense does not intercept every bad pass like they did in 09 and earlier.
The only reason some one would not rank this 3 stars or higher is they don't like the changes.
New kick meter is great, is like the pitch meter in mlb The show 10, and you can better adjust to online meter lag.
Strategy pad could use some work. But madden team is doing patches, so maybe it will go in.
Online team play is fun, except it lacks the depth of NHL frachines club play, and I wish the same camera was used for defense as it is for offense.
Defense Ai could use some work, but sliders can be tweaked for that.
Awful, as usual - Aug 26, 2010
Once again, EA sports gets away with murder here. You get a terrible product that is exactly the same as last year. They have no reason to put effort into the game because of the stupid license agreement with the NFLPA. O wait, there is one new feature actually this year, you get to pay extra to play online... Are you serious?! I hate Madden, and I hate EA sports with a passion. The day that the EA losses its license agreement with the equally awful NFLPA will be a great day.
Previous reviewers are idiots (for the most part, sorry) - Aug 26, 2010
I really don't know what you all are whining about. After looking at the reviews I went down and played the Xbox360 demo once again for the 5th time. Sure, there are shortcomings (the option to change the direction of your receiver at the line and some other things that aren't the same as Madden 10) and I am not going to pay $59 to buy the game ('cause no game is worth $60 as far as I'm concerned), but this game feels pretty good, new animations that look more realistic and it flows pretty good. I don't play online, so I don't really care about that. As with all EA Madden games they really don't change from year to year other than changing the way you are able to control certain things, however this is a pretty entertaining game as far as the demo goes. Maybe the full game is crap, but I'm thinking that it is no different than all the previous releases. I have to give this a 5 for fun and a 4 for removing some of the aspects from the '10 version. I agree that EA has not really come up with anything spectacular, but this version is pretty good.
Really? - Aug 25, 2010
I've owned every Madden since '92 on SNES. By far this is the worst one ever made. It doesn't even feel like you are playing football, and removing the sprint button?! are you high!?! This game was made for infants who like the bright colors of the Miami Dolphins uniforms, it in no way should be called a Madden game and it most DEFINITELY should not be called a football game, much less a sports one. I propose EA sports grows a pair and releases a Madden 11.5 to appease the hardcore gamers whom they've lost with this sick joke of a game. The only bright spot is that Drew Brees is on the cover, so we are guaranteed to not see the New Overrated Saints in the Super Bowl again drawing the biggest bandwagon jump since the Oregon Trails. One star for that.
Slap in the face - Aug 25, 2010
In today's tough economic times, Madden 11 is the latest release from a major corporation in the consumer goods sector to cross the line of absurdity. You would think that with a growing adult aged audience, increasing negative publicity via social networking, at the very least the love of football would motivate them to put together a product to be proud of. I do not have much to add to the reviews here. The game is simply not fun anymore. Still have my copy of 2005, would love for Microsoft to release the emulator so I could play it on my 360. Things I hate about this game:
Gameflow- play calling sucks at least ask madden I had three to choose from or could back out and choose my own play
Streamlined Menus/ Pre play controls (d pad) - Just absurd, how is making selecting things and navigation more difficult "streamlining" You never have total control of a menu and pre-play takes too long is awkward 2005 was better at this
Fight for the Fumble - How did this get green lighted for another year?
In 2005 I could save my game at any point of a game. Why the !! can't I do it 6 years later on a next gen console.
Gameplay - Is boring, choppy
Franchise Mode - Used to be what made this game addicting, Teams moving, expansion draft, sick draft picks, holdouts, players demanding trades, progression with otas. Every year this gets leaner and I find less of a reason to keep playing. Good Riddance I can find better things to do with my time and money. I would rather mow my lawn and mulch around my house.
Buy it used! - Aug 25, 2010
I think this game goes into the buy it used and pay the extra 10$ to play online if you have to have it.
I loved Madden 07 on the PS2, but now that I've got a 360 I'm a lot disappointed in this game. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it is full of ads, but it comes down to the fact that every time I play the Bears, my console locks up. I've copied the game to the HD hoping that would fix the issue, but there is something about Madden my console new 360 hates.
I literally started calling timeouts after I kicked extra points just so I could skip the Verizon drive summary as it is annoying.
None of my other games cause lock-up issues and my console is less than a month old. Madden is the only game that causes me problems. I really don't want to skip the game and have the PC play it. No errors appear, just a complete lock-up of the console.
Note: If you don't accept the privacy policy literally half the game is turned off. You can't earn Madden coins for upgrades, can't play online, can only exhibit / franchise / practice.
Over all the game could be great, but with extremely obnoxious with ads, privacy, lock-ups, play flow sucking big time...I might sell it used with all the issues I've had.
Most frustrating game ever! - Aug 23, 2010
Online play is ridiculous, first of all. If your opponent has any less of a connection speed than you, he has a huge lag advantage. Secondly, the makers of this game must have been the makers of Halo. When you have a WIDE OPEN receiver, dont throw it to him...the defender does a 5-10 yard Halo-lunge to intercept or deflect the pass. Third, the wild cat is unstoppable. I cannot stop it when Im on defense, and my opponent cant stop it when I run it. The gameflow mode is ok. It makes the game a lot faster, but I swear to god it only knows 3 maybe 4 plays. It runs the same thing over and over again. And lastly, there is a huge east coast bias with this game. All of the east coast teams are good, all of them, even the crappy ones. The teams progressively get worse and worse the more west you go.
Dont buy this if you get the urge. Rent it, and if you are one of the few who actually likes the game you can then buy it.
Where is the fun? - Aug 23, 2010
My review isn't the first one you've read for the game so I'm not going to reiterate all of the stuff people are saying.
-Gameflow is stupid. Doesn't tell you the play but more of an rpg explanation of the play. You have to press the trigger to see your play. On defense I feel like I have no control over what is going on. The buttons to do certain things are unresponsive. It's just not a fun game anymore. What happened to the time back in Madden 06 and 07 where you went through training camp and increased your players attributes? That was a great feature. Where is the hit stick? Truck stick? None of these features are in the game anymore. Now they are replaced with things like - gameflow and coins. You have to buy coins to make your team better. It's so stupid.
Pretty good. gettiing better slowly - Aug 23, 2010
No new game modes or features that are not online. Much more realistic though. i used to have madden 09 and now receivers actually catch tipped passes and tapo their toes down last second to stay in bounds. Locomotion system is awesome. made a 6'11" 400lb guy who just plows over everyone. Madden series is slowly getting better. supposedly online is really fun, and with new "ultimate team", but i dont have Gold so i cant play it. I recommend getting it if u dont have a newer version of madden. but if u have 09 or 10, just stick it out a while until the price drops.
Best Madden Yet! Don't Listen to Nay-Sayers! - Aug 23, 2010
The gameplay is as close to the actual game as it can be. Take a look at the game, and then look at an NFL football game. The tackles are much more similar to those in real life. Returning a kick off for a touchdown is more difficult and more real.
Overall, if you are a Madden fan and a football fan, this is the game to get. I Have gotten Madden every year since 2007, and can't imagine going back after playing this game. See this game for yourself and don't listen to the nay-sayers. People complain about Madden every single year it comes out, and yet the game sells millions and becomes more popular every single year. So, the people who complain are in the minority, and the people who are complaining probably complain every year the game comes out, yet they still buy it.
You couldn't pay me to give up this game. It's that good!
Not the best but still top shelf! - Aug 23, 2010
What I see from most reviews on here is just like every other game EA sports makes a bunch of reviews by people that still have 2k fever and despise EA for anything they do or dont do in a game. Im convinced it would not matter what EA put in this game some would find something to gripe about and pick to death. I have played some people online before and the main problem i see with most is they have no idea how to really play football. They live in the days where 2 plays would win u a game on offense and defense. Now we have AI in these games and though not always perfect somewhat stops these 2 play champions and they dont like it so they pick everything else to death. This game looks better the gamplay is overall smoother and faster, not as tight controls and the audible system changed and the control is a little awkward now. They could have left the kicking meter like it was but that can be overcome. This is not the best Madden ever made I like last year's better but its still worth having and playing. I'm not gonna sit here and pick to death something that is no more than 2k let me do this why doesnt Madden I'm mad and this game is horrible. The people with those kind of reviews need to get out of sega genesis mode and play football with some AI.<2 play champs> Ha!
Awful! - Aug 21, 2010
If this is the best EA Sports can do for a pro football game, they ought to get out of this. John Madden is retired and I like John, they made a lot of good Madden games in the previous decades. It's time for EA Sports to end this series and give up the rights to the rosters and let someone else make some Football games and have a few companies compete, EA can try buy good luck? This game stinks in ever sense of the word, I only rented it. I didnt care much for last year and this year is worse. After one night I took it back to the store after 8-10 hours of game play that had me shaking my head most of the time through. I wont get into the details, too many others already have said everything. All the negative reviews are right as rain! Madden fans stop going out and buying this every year. All your doing is feeding a cash cow that cares nothing about the game they make. Rent it first, read the reviews, if people stop buying this due to declining game quality, EA Sports will have to improve the game. If you keep buying it regardless, they will care less unless the law suit wins out and the monopoly stops.
Would rate zero if i can - Aug 21, 2010
i Will have to go back to madden 2010. this game is buggy and reward offense , no control on defense the worst engine i have seen , Thank god did not pay full price for it. save your money and play 2010. and to add insult to injury you spend $59.00 and they want you to pay more for buying players like fantasy football . Shame on EA
this game should be selling $29.99 all day long and at that i will not buy it.
Worst Madden Ever - Aug 21, 2010
The title of the review speaks for itself. I have every madden, this one is the worst. I got bored of the 2009 Madden so I started playing my 2004 Madden on my old Xbox because this madden sucks so bad.
Why do I pay for XBOX Live - Aug 21, 2010
As soon as I bought this game I ran home to put it in the box and get online to play with friends. I mean, let's face it, squashing your friends on XBOX Live is most the fun of this game. I was SEVERELY disappointed to learn the EA is now trying to gouge us as consumers for every dime they can get. YOU CANNOT PLAY ONLINE WITHOUT PAYING AN ADDITIONAL FEE. Further, you can't play the Ultimate team options UNLESS YOU PAY AN ADDITIONAL FEE. They even had the audacity to implement a store in the game in which you could BUY enhancements for your game. Upon discovering all these problems with the game, I immediately felt sick in my gut and wanted to take the game back to get my $60 dollars back. I have one thing to say. "NFL intellectual property gurus, END YOUR EXCLUSIVITY CONTRACT WITH Electronic Arts SO THAT OTHER COMPANIES HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRODUCE A WORTHY NFL PRODUCT!"
