Blurry images and annoying features - Sep 01, 2010
I'm not a professional photographer, but as far as amateur point and click family photography goes, I've owned several digital cameras and have shot many family photos in all sorts of conditions and would also consider myself pretty tech savy. Of all the cameras I've ever used, the Nikon L110 is the most dissapointing. When I took the camera outside and shot still photos of birds and flowers, they came out beautifully. However, when trying to shoot pictures of my one year old in my house, images were consistenly coming out blurry and nothing I did fully remedied the problem. Some of the people who have given this camera positive reviews have suggested that perhaps those getting blurry images did not have it in auto mode, were not adjusting the white balance, etc. All I can say is that I tried all those things and more, went through the manual and read about all the features but could not find any setting that completely remedied the problem.
The bottom line is when your toddler is doing something cute, you do not have time to scroll through menus adjusting various functions. To me, auto mode suggests that the camera automatically finds the best setting and takes the picture. The worst part is that, there is another setting called "easy auto" that is supposed to do just that, but when I tried it the results were even worse. Sitting five feet away from my son in his high chair eating peas, with all the lights on, and the images were so blurry as to be unusable.
A few other features were also annoying enough to mention: the lens cap is a seperate piece that you have to manually place on the lens rather than it automatically being covered when you turn the camera off. Ditto with the flash, you have to manually pop it out for flash pictures. And although some people might prefer this, I think its worth mentioning that it takes AA batteries rather than having a rechargeable unit (which is what I prefer- saves money and rechargeables have a longer life).
A great little camera. - Aug 27, 2010
The Nikon Coolpix L110 is a great little camera for people who are nervous about buying one of those "confusing" and expensive DSLR's. It takes fabulous pictures and at 12.1 megapixels, you can enlarge your photos to just about any size. The 15X zoom is nifty as well. The macro feature works pretty well, but you have to get pretty close for the autofocus to work. That can make shooting insects difficult (but not impossible though). There are many shooting modes like Sport, Landscape, Smart Portrait, and....you get the idea. The only mode that is missing is Manual mode, which may be a major con to some, but the only complaint I have is that you can't take time lapse shots due to lack of ability to change the shutter speed manually. I use my old camera for that. Oh well. For $200 I won't let that sour me to this camera (my old camera actually cost more). A minor con is that the flash doesn't flip up by itself when needed. The camera tells you to raise it, but I've found that it's just easier to raise it from the beginning. It just takes getting used to. No big deal. The last minor con is that the 3" LCD screen automatically shuts down after only 20 seconds or so and takes a few seconds to come back up when you hit a button. I missed a few shots due to that in the beginning, but I just started pressing the shutter button half way down periodically so I don't miss as many opportunities. There is no eyepiece or viewfinder on this camera either. You point and shoot through the LCD screen. I was worried about that, but I find that it hasn't effected my pictures at all. The screen is bright and clear. I found the neck strap to be limiting considering that you'll want the camera off your neck due to the point and shoot nature of it. I ditched it and spent ten bucks on a DSLR wrist strap. It's soooo much easier. I can't comment on the video feature because I haven't used it and have no intention of using it. I have a camcorder for that. LOL. The battery life is FANTASTIC! I use Energizer Ultimate lithiums (it takes 4) and I've shot over 800 shots and just got my first battery warning today. No complaints there. I recommend this camera highly if you're looking for a cheaper camera that still takes great pictures. I hope this review is helpful to most of you. I know I'm no scholar. I'll try to include some of my pictures if I can.
Great over all camera - Aug 15, 2010
Over all, I am very pleased; great portability and photo quality, but I am a little disappointed with the clarity of long range shots.
cool coolpix - Aug 09, 2010
not the kind of camera you just pick up and shoot but has alot of features and once you learn it a good deal for the money. very lightweight
The best camara ever - Aug 08, 2010
The clearest pictures and the fastest shutter button for a digital. I swear it could be an slr. There is not a viewfinder, which dissapointed me, but the quality and the speed I can take pictures surpasses that. I almost did not get it for that reason, This is the best camera I have ever owned!
Snap shooters dream - Jul 28, 2010
First impression of the camera was it was smaller than expected from the photos.
This in no way detracts from the ease of use or the logical position of the controls. I was amazed at the versatility, range of easy to use programs combined with the simple method of bringing the camera back to its standard settings.
This has to be a super point and shoot combined with a wider range of photo applications that could compete with the programs that are on very expensive SLR style models.
Value for money, ease of use and portability all have been found in this camera.
I am considering getting two more for family members who I know will be very pleased at the simplicity of use.
Nikon Coolpx L110 Review - Jul 25, 2010
Bought this for my wife and she loves it. Easy to use and takes great pictures. I highly recommend it along with a larger flash memory card by Transcend. That way you can take great video as well.
Nikon L110 makes REALLY COOLPIX and Easily! - Jul 21, 2010
Totally satisfied with this camera! Overall very easy to use with intuitive interface, have achieved great results already. Very reasonable price for a camera with such quality and features. Only one minor complaint: the software that generates an error message that comes up when the user powers on the camera with the lens cover attached does not allow the situation to be rectified without powering down, removing the cover and powering back up. Like I stated, this is a minor aggravation. I do like the feature of being able to view the photos by pressing the |> button when the camera is off--does not necessitate removal of lens cover. I have used it for weeks on the enclosed batteries without incident although I plan to change to rechargeable AA's. The flip-up flash really puts out the light!
Not a good buy - Jul 18, 2010
I have found that this camera is best for stills, with decent lighting.
The photos are best when the subject is not moving, at all (portraits, flowers, landscapes).
Would be a good choice for taking pics of items to sell.
I brought this under-performer to the RedSox game as a last chance, but honestly, this camera mostly falls short.
Shakey- blurry crap, and the video, poor focus. Do not pan your shots or the video will break up, lots of artifacts.
The button for the video is also awkward, and you need to press it slow and firm, or it won't start.
Oh how I wish I returned this, but I thought I was using it wrong and time would tell. Nope, just crap.
VIEW WINDOW - Jul 16, 2010
U CANNOT SEE TLHE SUBJECT IN VIEW WINDOW IN BRIGHT LIGHT. A POP UP SHADE FOR THE WINDOW WOULD BE PERFECT. I HAD TO PURCHASE ONE FROM DELKIN TTL 20.00. 0OTHERWISE IM HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT.
Good Camera Good Price - Jul 13, 2010
i Bought this camara to my wife and this present surprise her. The pictures have great quality. Good for the money.
Fabo for the price - Jul 12, 2010
I originally had a Kodak easy share...let us just say, it was a piece of pooh. Enough said. I really looked around and researched for awhile before settling on this particular one. Between all the features and zoom capability, video, etc... it was a good choice. I am not a very camera savvy person, but I ran it by my dad who is; he was amzed at the close-up ability and the zoom, etc...it was an easy sell, and the PRICE was fantastic!
This is incredibly easy to use. I didn't really even look at the directions, even with the video. I was just playing around with it, trial and error. Super easy and user friendly...
So, if you want something user friendly, simple, with great attributes, this should do you nicely! MUCH better then the Kodak! UGH!!!
Nikon Coolpix L110 - Jul 10, 2010
Had my Nikon L110 for about a month now and have taken almost a thousand pics according to the counter (of which about 700 are wonderful). This camera takes wonderful pictures for a point and shoot, some of the best I have ever had. The clarity and detail are awsome on all types of pics, but especially on close-ups (like of my wife's flowers). My only complaint about the camera is with the ease of use. You need to be familiar with the settings before you get good shots. If on the wrong setting, images are very blurry. I have missed some good shots because of that. The other annoying thing is that the flash has to be manually raised to use. That sucks since you need the flash for all pictures unless outside on a sunny day. Missed a lot of good pics because of that, too. However, now that I am familiar with the camera, I absolutly love it!!! I would recommend this camera to anyone with some knowledge about picture taking and proper lighting. I could also see, however, how someone with limited tech skills would never get the hang of it.
Not bad, not great...still on the fence. - Jul 06, 2010
I did a lot of homework before making this purchase, and my main issue is something that some have indicated before: On AUTO mode the camera will use flash when it doesn't need to or will not use it when it does. Sometimes it will overexpose the picture because apparently it needs some time to process the lighting conditions before "deciding" what to do with the flash. It's odd, and makes you have to do a little more work on your own to get the picture right. Also, what's up with having to pop up the flash manually? What a dumb idea! Once you pick it up and shoot a picture you're half expecting the flash to just pop up or just go off....but no, you have to do it yourself. I had a Konica Minolta Dimage Z20 before this and I think that one was so much more user friendly.
All in all, it takes good pictures and videos, obviously, don't forget to buy at least an 8gb memory card. But I tell you what, for this price I believe there are cheaper cameras that can take pictures at least as good as these.
Disappointed - Jul 02, 2010
I am very disappointed with Nikon. I bought this camera on April, 21 and I used it for about one month and suddenly it has broken. I used it for just three times and nothing happened, for example the camera dind't fall or something else like that!! I sent it to be repaired in authorized assintance in Brazil and they told me that the camera principal circuit was broken and it will cost more than the camera price (2 times more expensive). I live in Brazil and a friend of mine brought it to me. The camera will be sent to USA as soon as possible to be repaired, but I will never buy a Nikon again. It was not a good experience and it has been a big trouble and a wasted time and money.
Great Camera at a good Price Nikon Coolpix L110 - Jun 29, 2010
The Nikon Coolpix L110 is worth the hard earn money you will us to purchase it. The camera is very easy to use with a nice viewing screen. The buttons and menu's make it simply easy for most people to navigate. The photo quality is vivid and clean, the HD video is great for outdoors, and well lite rooms (remember it's not a camcorder people) lol, the price is right and I have recommended the camera to friends and would recommend the camera to you as well. I did however test out the camera at my local Bestbuy before I purchased the camera online. It was the best move I made because I got to see other makes and models up close and was able to make the better chose because of it.
I use the camera for both work and leisure so I can get the most out of it.
Favorite feature is the sports mode.
You should try going to the store and testing them out before buying.
I hope I was able to help.
Nikon Camera - Jun 27, 2010
Purchased this camera for my wife a month ago and she loves it. You can't beat this camera for the price. It takes great pictures. I highly recommend this camera.
user friendly - Jun 22, 2010
I have used this for a couple of weeks now and am very satisfied with the clarity and color of the shots I've taken thus far.
The interface is very simple and Easy Auto-Mode takes very decent pics. I need to use Auto Mode and try out some of the settings
for different scenes. The Macro-Mode is very impressive. Only one complaint is that the images are often blurry when zoomed out far, as
it is difficult to keep the camera steady. The camera is very light and I think this picks up the shake a lot more and also there is
no optical viewfinder which would help to stabilize the camera a bit when shooting. At about medium zoom the pics are very good and I
have had a couple pics come out decent at full optical zoom when my arms were resting on something (to stabilize the camera). I can
imagine that a tripod, which I do have tucked away in a closet somewhere, will make for some very clear zoom pics. I take photos of birds and
this is a decent camera in the absence of a DSLR...which I would LOVE to have, but can't afford. So, if you are looking for a good telephoto
camera that is inexpensive then this is a great choice (for point and shoot)I must say.
excellent camera - Jun 20, 2010
We just got back from two weeks in Hawaii and took over 2300 pictures there with this camera. You definately need to read some of the manual which explains all of the settings. While you can get ok pictures just pointing and shooting, you will be much hapier by selecting the correct settings. The zoom is fantastic and allowed for some really amazing shots. Another really cool feature my wife fell in love with is the sports mode. While you do sacrifice quality for quantity it will help insure you don't miss that perfect shot. In sports mode the photos are 3MP instead of the usual 12 but they rapid fire at a rate depending on the speed you press the shutter release. We are very pleased with the camera. The only thing I would love to see is a waterproof housing...
I Love This Camera!!! - Jun 16, 2010
I have always wanted to get into photography and wow, this was a breakthrough into that world.clean pictures, and great effects, along with tremendous zoom, make this camera my all time favorite purchase on amazon!
Nikon Coolpix L110 12.1 MP Zoom - Jun 15, 2010
Nice for Macro and medium zoom shots. The long zoom seems blurry most of the time. Could be that the light weight makes the thing hard to hold steady. My older Sony H1 8MP 10x zoom is much better on the long shots. Shutter seems slow. I like the flash, really lights up a room, and the manual flip-up is great. It is a keeper at the AMZ price ($229). Have paid 10 times this for Canon DSLR lenses. Point being, for a walk-around picture taker at a car show, picnic, whatever, this fills my needs.
Best camera I have ever used - Jun 14, 2010
I have used many cameras in my work as a journalist, but this L110 has to be the easiest, and most useful camera I have ever used or owned. I have owned many Nikon cameras, all have good things about them, they are all great instruments for creating art, but the L110 is the best for journalists who need good no nonsense photos for news. This one has it all, and for every use I can imagine.
i love this camera - Jun 13, 2010
This camera takes really good pictures no photogaphy expertise needed pics come out wonderfully clear zoom is great
DOES IT HAVE PANORAMIC? - Jun 13, 2010
I am wondering if this cmaera the Nikon Coolpix L110 has panoramic settings on it to take panoramic pictures because I looked on the Best Buy website and that website tells me the this camera has panoramic assist I am wondering what is panoramic assist does that mean this camera has panoramic settings and I can take panoramic pictures what does that mean because I just got another digital camera for my birthday and it has panoramic picture taking but I don't know if I want to keep the camera or not because it dosen't have an eye pice and a neck strap and is twice as small as this camera but I love the features on the camera I just got and I love panoramic I hope this has panoramic and again what does panoramic assist mean does that mean that this camera takes panoramic photos please help me.?
blurry, I'm taking it back - Jun 09, 2010
I usually use my SLR camera, but wanted a light weight, decent point and shoot camera to take when I didn't want the extra weight of the SLR. I didn't expect SLR quality, but out of about 100 pictures, less than half of them were sharp. These were pictures indoor, outdoors, stills and sports. I tried various settings with no improvement. It does not quickly refocus on moving objects. I took pictures of people walking slowly, and they came out blurry. If you use the zoom, even a little, you have to be absolutely still to prevent any blur, even with the image stabilization on. I like the grip, but if you are holding the grip, waiting for a shot, it is very easy to accidentally touch the sensitive buttons on the camera, and the next thing you know you have it in Record or Menu. I also prefer rechargeable batteries to 4 AA's, but that is personal preference. I also don't like that it has a loose lens cap. Yes, you can attach it to the strap, but I prefer the lens to cover automatically when turned off.
