Great video camera for baby boomers - Aug 29, 2010
My daughter bought this camera for me for my birthday. It is easy to use and fun to share my photos and video with my family and friends. I carry it around in my pocket all the time, so I don't miss anything.
Interesting hybrid of camcorder and video player - Aug 17, 2010
Flip pioneered the "instant camcorder" concept and has prospered by it.
Now that everybody else is piling in, Flip perceived a need to expand its space and came up with the SlideHD.
The basic Flip functionality is present: you can record up to 4 hours of truly gorgeous 720p HD video, Audio quality is acceptable if your subject is nearby and ambient noise isn't too loud. Low-light performance isn't great, but considering the physics involved, there is no surprise there. The minimum focal length of the lens is longer than I would like meaning you can't sit across a typical restaurant table and capture two adorable grandchildren being - well - adorable. The minimum focus distance is also a bit on the long side.
Bottom line is that the Flip SlideHD is a very good instant camcorder that is ready to go on a moment's notice. It is a lot faster to get a Flip into action than most dedicated camcorders, still cameras with a video capability and smartphones.
In terms of features and usage, the SlideHDis very different than other Flip models. It is the largest and heaviest of the entire line. Instead of a LCD screen and physical buttons on the back, there is a large LDC screen with graphical buttons. The onscreen buttons are very responsive. Speaker output is surprisingly loud, even if tinny. There's an HDMI output (no cable supplied), a standard tripod socket and a headphone jack.
The big feature though is that you slide the back of the unit and it tilts up to reveal a 3" touch sensitive screen and a capacitive slide panel below it. You can play back your videos or load up to 12 hours of video that has been converted with the included FlipShare software.
Is this useful or just a gimmick? I haven't really decided yet. The 3" screen is adequate for getting a better view of Little Junior playing soccer and, with some technically savvy manipulation on the conversion, can also be used to play back other video. Overall, I think the Slide feature is handy, but not vital.
The battery won't give you a full 4 hours, but compiling 4 hours of video in a single run is pretty difficult. Typical of Flip camcorders, there is an arm that plugs into your USB port. But I really prefer to use short USB cables instead of putting that kind of load on the Flip or my computer's USB ports.
Overall, I like the idea of the SlideHD, although I think the capability of using readily available AA batteries makes the UltraHD a more utilitarian camcorder, with half the capacity.
One thing is for sure: the Flip is still a leading contender in the niche they invented.

Pretty good - Aug 16, 2010
I just got my flip slideHD last week and am still experimenting with it a bit so i'll be updating this review as time goes by. I'm only giving it 3 stars for now because:
1. When you make videos at night all the lights have a large halo around them
2. The zoom function is easy enough to use but the zoom range is quite limited compared to other cameras
3. Although I knew that the flip would have simple / limited controls, I was surprised at just how limited they are. From that perspective you could almost think of this as a child's camera (if it wasn't for the price and the fact that it's an HD camera).
4. When you email a video via the flip software to someone, they get a link with your video. The problem is that the quality of the image is so reduced that it pretty much defies the purposed of having an HD camera.
More updates to come...
BAD PLAYBACK - Aug 14, 2010
Unless you have the 3ghz+ processor in your computer DO NOT buy this product. The playback is jumpy and makes the video unviewable. There is NO fix, no repair, no downgrade, nothing. We are returning this.
Perfect for what I needed... - Aug 13, 2010
I race cars and I needed a very simple to use video camera to place in the race car for "in car" video. I am very happy with the purchase as it takes nice high quality video, stores 4 hours of data, the battery lasts fairly long for a digital device, and it has the flip screen to watch the play back in case it is needed in protests. What I didn't expect is that I would find this so useful and fun for uses outside of the race car application. I soon found myself carrying this thing with me all the time especially on vacations. The other thing I really like is the software that came with it which makes it a snap to share out to YouTube and Facebook. Yes the software is a little cludgey as far as file maintenance of the videos but the sharing aspect and the fact that you can freeze a frame to create a snapshot make this icing on the cake. Make sure you buy the wall jack charger which charges the unit faster than being connected to a USB slot on a computer. There are far more AC outlets than USB slots when you are on vacation or away from home. This was a good buy.....
You can find a sample of the in car video produced here: [...]
poor service - Aug 04, 2010
I had this product for a week and could only record about 4 minutes if video before it locked up dead!!!!!! It took a month of support calls before thay would replace it for me.
Slide HD & Warranty are both GARBAGE!!! - Jul 31, 2010
The USB Drive would not connect to the computre after two months. The company stated that it was "damage" and would not honor the warranty. I would NOT recommend this camera. It is expensive and Cisco will not honor their one year warranty if the device fails. I had to pay $80 to have it serviced.
The Flip is great - Jul 22, 2010
Having used the original Flip I decided to upgrade to the latest model, this is without doubt the easiest Cam corder I have ever seen, a child could use it
huge disappointment! - Jul 21, 2010
i bought this camera a few days ago because i had left my other little camcorder at the lake and needed one to use immediately. i bought this one because of the features, size, etc.
i tried it out for a few short recordings, was pleased with the quality of the pictures, charged it up and took to an event that i really needed to record. it recorded for 35 minutes and locked up. i could not get it to work or to shut off. it finally shut off when the battery died.
there is no recording of the 35 minutes that it did record but the camera shows that i only 3 hours and 24 minutes left out of the original 4 hours to record. it is using the space but does not have the recording.
the software it installed on my computer also shuts down everytime i try to use it.
i am disappointed and frustrated and will rush down to best buy tomorrow to return it before the 14 days (what happened to 30 days?) is up.
please don't take the risk of buying this. i had not read the reviews before i purchased and i wish i had.
Great camera Love the compact size - Jul 18, 2010
The pocket size camera is fantastic. I can take it anywhere so easily. The user friendly software to save and share video is so convenient.
Great - Jul 17, 2010
I like this camera its portable and has everything that I'm looking for in a video camera. I have had no problems with my Flip!
Great Camcorder - Jul 16, 2010
Had a small problem with the device however, suppprt provided info to gen i working properly.
Poor inside recording quality - Jul 14, 2010
Regardless of the many new features on Slide I'd like to share with several negativeness points. The first one is screen blue-red-pink pixelage when you try to record movie inside with slightly lack of natural light. So such camera is for outside only. The on/off button was designated for probably female's fingers or their nails usage, man's finger experiencing a hardship to push. USB connector is good for recharge only in case you are trying to see movie on your USB complaint TV, HDMI cable a solution only in that case. Camera goes without ANY software so I still in puzzle about how easy( according to the manual) I'll make my clips "in a moment" and submit them to Facebook, Utube, etc. Also you have to read manual many times to understand about how to adjust the volume. Weight is now close to the small "regular" camcorder. White color is unbelievably markable. If you are planning to buy Slide somewhere out of SYSCO store you will not be able to choose a color of your camera.
Don't waste your Time or Money - Jul 12, 2010
Sam reviewed Flip Video SlideHD High-Definition Camcorder with 3" Touch Screen - White - White/Si...lver at Best Buy and gave it 1 out of 5 stars.
This review is for the manager at the Beaumont store who says this item has NO negative reviews, maybe he should read his own stores site before saying that again! I have owned 2 previous Ultra Flips before owning the SLIDE. I have always LOVED Flips and was excited to ...get the SLIDE. I HATE the Slide, it is a BUG nightmare. It freezes up! The software is continuously trying to update! Sometimes you can't turn it off because it's frozen and making a loud buzzing nose! The software in THIS flip will shut down my computer, a different computer than I usually work on. AND to top it off BEST BUY won't even take their CRUMMY product back, because it's after the 14 days. On day 22 of owning it I have had non-stop issues. I have only owned it for 2 months and have NEVER been so dissapointed. Shame on Flip for making a worthless product, and SHAME on BEST BUY for having HORRIBLE customer service. Do not waste your time or MONEY!
Pros:BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
Cons:TOO MANY GLITCHES! WASTES YOUR TIME!
Love the FLIP! - Jun 29, 2010
To be truthful, I have not had the opportunity to use my new "slide" Flip. I do have the original 2 hour Flip. I absolutely LOVE this camcorder. I am technically challenged when it comes to camcorders and cameras---especially the digital. I have sent many, many back because I couldn't figure how to use them. With the Flip I was using it and putting it on my computers as soon as I got it and turned it on. I have no doubt this new one will be the same. LOVE IT!!
simply point and shoot - Jun 14, 2010
This is a great item if you really don't want to have complicated manuals to read, if you're not electronics savvy or if you simply want something quick, simple and good quality videos. One thing I wish they would have implemented was a portrait shooting mode and a landscape mode like the iPhone. The product is the simplest thing to use, just point and shoot. Nothing fancy (besides the flip screen for better viewing capacity) or complicated about this product - so this isn't for you if you're looking for in camcorder editing or effect... again just point and shoot. The zoom isn't very much of a zoom but again for the purpose it serves it's not bad!
My First Flip But Probably Last Because of Customer Support - Jun 09, 2010
I've never owned a Flip, but had received a gift certificate for a SlideHD as a birthday gift. So I headed over to (TheFlip.com) and ordered it up. The order process went smoothly, although their website seemed a little slow. As part of the order process, you can customize your unit from the list of graphics they present, or even upload your own design. A pretty neat feature and didn't cost any extra.
I received the unit just in time for my Memorial Day vacation and was ready to have an easy, convenient way to record interesting events during my trip.
The software that comes with it installed without an issue on my Windows 7 laptop and anytime I plug the SlideHD in to my USB, the app starts with no problem and presents videos that have been recorded. I've mostly used their software to pull the videos to my laptop and haven't really used any of their FlipShare bits. My workflow is more to upload a video to YouTube or to FaceBook.
As I began using the unit, it seemed like anytime I recorded for awhile either in short chunks, or a longer movie, the unit would begin to lockup. The only way out was to hold the power button down and wait 5 seconds for a hard reset. At first I thought it was just a fluke, but it's pretty consistent. If I set the unit to record and just let it run, I get close to 5 mins before lockup and then if I restart the unit and start recording again, I only get about 1 min if lucky. Also, every time the unit locks up, you lose whatever it was recording at the time.
There were a bunch of times I experienced this lockup during my vacation where I missed opportunities of recording my kids doing something due to this lockup. It was REAL annoying!
I had opened a support ticket and can say sadly that customer support is TERRIBLE. At this point, I wouldn't recommend the device to a friend just because of the poor customer support. I'm suspecting I got a lemon since I don't see more reports on the web of this lockup, so I'll probably be returning it for a new device if I can ever get customer support to respond. they don't issue an RMA until you go through the support channel.
I have included my current support ticket for anyone interested to see what I mean by poor customer support and will update my review if anything is added to the ticket.

Hello,
I just recently got a Flip SlideHD and works great with the exception that if I am recording for chunks of time either by stopping/starting over a period of time or recording one long segement, the device locks up where the video display shows whatever was recording at the time of lockup and the front still has the red lights on like it's recording still. However, the only way to get out of this situation is to hold down the power button for 10 seconds to cause a reset. At that point, whatever you were recording when it locked up is gone.
Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent or fix the issue I'm seeing?
thank you,
Bill Devine

Any updates on this? I provided the information you requested and have not heard anything back. I'm still experiencing the lock-ups I mentioned above and it's pretty annoying when you lose a moment you wanted to capture due to a lockup.
Thank you,
Bill

Seriously, is this a problem you've been seeing, or do I just have a defective unit? This almost seems heat related. If I let it start recording after not using for awhile, I'll get about 4:51 in before it freezes. If I then do the hard reset holding down the power button for 5 seconds, and repeat the process, I only get about a min recorded if I'm lucky before it locks up. In all lockup cases, whatever was being recorded isn't saved.
Thank you for your time,
Bill
not bad for a small inexpensive recorder - Jun 07, 2010
Planning to take to Alaska later this month. The plan is to get some video of the scenery without hauling a large recorder around. The screen is so small, the sound is so low, and the zoom is practically non-existent, but hopefully it will "show" better when I return from the trip and plug it into a big screen.
Can it be a problem to use with high elevations? - Jun 05, 2010
I bought this product few weeks ago, overall I do like the product, but there was a problem happened to me. Last 2 weeks during I was traveling in Tibet, the Flip did freeze 2 times during the shooting. At the time I did not what to do since it can not be turn off. I was worried if the data will be lost. Finally, after few hours, it turns off because the low battery. I wasn't sure this is an individual product problem or it is because the high altitude. The problems happen when the elevation is about 4,500 meter. If I can get some answers regarding the problem, I would be very appreciate. I do felt a little disappointment the freeze problem happened to me which made me missed shooting some valuable places and scenery.
Poor sound - May 31, 2010
The poor sound recording capability makes the device nearly useless for sound recording with the video. Video quality is quite good. Ease of use is great. There is a somewhat slower than expected adjustment to changes in lighting and to use the zoom is almost impossible without moving the camara. A good idea but more work is needed,
Love the Slide - May 29, 2010
Love the camera and the battery last forever. The movies look great. I was wanting something small and east to use. I have had other camcorder and seems like they can be a pain to use. When my granddaughter saw that i was looking at them she said the flips are what they use at my school. That pretty much closed the deal for me and the good reveiws from the flip and the slide. I'm very happy with it.
Great video camera! - May 24, 2010
I love this video recorder! I bought a different version for my brother for Christmas and loved it so much that I bought the Slide for myself. I would never carry my bulky camcorder with me, the slide fits into my purse and I carry it with me at ALL times. It is perfect to take out and capture small moments and the picture quality is better than my camcorder!!! I have some great videos that I never would have had if I wasn't carrying my Slide with me. The battery life is EXCELLENT! I have had my Slide for over a month and I haven't had to charge it yet!
I have only used my Slide to capture videos and share them online. I have not tried to add a video/movie to it yet, but that was not my intended use for it. I just wanted something small and lightweight to carry with me so I could video my kids hockey games and family events.
Great little video camera for a great price!!!
Really Nice Magenta Cast - May 21, 2010
I bought this FlipVideo through Amazon, received it in a timely manner, and started using it. This FlipVideo Slide HD is a handy piece of work for carrying in your pocket and delivers some pretty good HD video for the most part except for one thing. I have had at least three of the earlier models of the FlipVideos and this is the first one that goes massively magenta when used indoors under tungsten light. It is fine in daylight but goes to a magenta cast that really sucks. I have other video cameras professional quality down to the lower end consumer camera and this is not a complaint about overall quality. It really delivers in natural daylight but it is all over when you find yourself in a situation that features tungsten. Even a little light in say, a restaurant, seems to overwhelm. This device seemed to be amazing when I first heard about it but obviously I had not heard about this. The features in the FlipVideo slide when used for presentation is great but something must have went wrong somewhere which is too bad because the camera itself is so conveniently handy.
Video Review of the Flip SlideHD Camcorder - May 21, 2010
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1IBOED02F01KE I made a rig to mount a Flip SlideHD, a Flip UltraHD, and a Flip MinoHD (2nd gen) on the same tripod, and display the video synchronized, side by side.
This review demonstrates the new features of the SlideHD, and gets down to the nuts and bolts of specs, video, and price comparisons that might cause you to choose one over the other.
The Slide adds a number of features that make viewing video on the camera itself easier and more pleasurable.
Improve design - May 17, 2010
Very easy to use. Unfortunately not good outdoors. Tried recording my daugther's soccer game. Couldn't tell what I was recording due to the glare from the sun on the screen. I could not see nothing on the screen. Only thing I could do is point toward the action, which reaaly didn't work. Would be nice if it had a stablizer. Otherwise is records nice when you can see the screen.
